21. QTL Analysis in the Pig : From the Identification of Quantitative Trait Loci to the Understanding of Molecular Mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Domestic pigs have become very different form the wild ancestors they originate from. Selection for muscle growth and meat quality has made the pig a good model for genetic studies of muscle development. The first part of this thesis presents a genome-wide scan for quantitative trait loci (QTL) in a cross between Landrace and Hampshire pigs. 22. In vivo Sub-regional dGEMRIC Analysis and Contrast Distribution in Clinical Studies of Human Knee Cartilage
Sammanfattning : Aims: This work was carried out to investigate whether considering cartilage depth in vivo dGEMRIC would provide additional information on the molecular content and changes in normal and diseased cartilage. Methods: Study I was a longitudinal study on 23 healthy volunteers; Study II was a case-control study on 9 sedentary individuals and 8 elite runners. LÄS MER
23. Molecular Structure, Interfacial Chain Topology, Electronic Structure and Fracture Toughness of Polyethylene: A Multiscale Computational Study
Sammanfattning : The structure of semicrystalline polyethylene (PE) strongly affects its properties. Two important structural features, namely the concentrations of tie chains and entanglements cannot be directly assessed using experimental techniques. LÄS MER
24. Probing the effects of photodegradation of acceptor materials in polymer solar cells: bulk, surface, and molecular level
Sammanfattning : Polymer solar cells (PSC) have reached record power conversion efficiencies of over 15%. The operational lifetime of PSCs, however, has to increase for their use in large area outdoor applications. LÄS MER
25. Apolipoprotein E and alpha-synuclein interactions, and their associations with neurodegenerative diseases
Sammanfattning : The apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) is expressed as three major isoforms, APOE ε2, ε3 and ε4 that encode the apoE2, E3 and E4 proteins, respectively. APOE ε4 is associated with an increased risk for age-related neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and increases the risk of dementia in Parkinson’s disease (PD), however, the exact molecular mechanisms underpinning the associations between APOE ε4 and neurodegeneration are still unknown.
