1. Shun the Pun, Rescue the Rhyme? : The Dubbing and Subtitling of Language Play in Film
Sammanfattning : Language-play can briefly be described as the wilful manipulation of the peculiarities of a linguistic system in a way that draws attention to these peculiarities themselves, thereby causing a communicative and cognitive effect that goes beyond the conveyance of propositional meaning. Among the various phenomena answering this description are the different kinds of puns, but also more strictly form-based manipulations such as rhymes and alliteration, in addition to a host of other, sometimes even fuzzier, subcategories. 2. Studies of Spinal Motor Control Networks in Genetically Modified Mouse Models
Sammanfattning : Spinal neurons are important in several aspects motor control. For example, the neurons essential for locomotor movements reside in the ventral spinal cord. In this thesis, different motor control functions are being related to neuronal populations defined by their common expression of a gene. LÄS MER
3. Modelling of Turbulent Flow and Heat Transfer for Building Ventilation
Sammanfattning : This thesis contributes to studies on the assessment of building ventilation performance and the development of turbulence models accounting for Low-Reynolds-number (LRN) effects and buoyant convection with heat transfer. Assessments of building ventilation performance are discussed with respect to indoor air distribution and passive contaminant dispersion. LÄS MER
4. Receptor Upregulation and MAPK Activity in Arteries and Bronchi Following Secondhand Smoke Exposure
Sammanfattning : Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Contractile receptor changes have been observed in several vascular diseases. The intracellular mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways are suggested to be associated with receptor upregulation. LÄS MER
5. Mechanistic characterization of post-transcriptional gene silencing
Sammanfattning : With the ongoing task of identifying and characterizing genes in the human genome, there is a great demand for tools to study these genes. Today, reverse genetics is the most effective way to explore gene function. This involves suppression of the gene of interest by a set of manipulation techniques. LÄS MER
