16. Towards a responsive functional material: Modification of porosity and grafting of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) in mesoporous silica SBA-15
Sammanfattning : Mesoporous silica materials, such as SBA-15, have potential as biocompatible carriers for pharmaceutical applications as well as mini-reactors in e.g. catalysis. This potential arises from their well-defined porous structure on the nanometre scale accompanied by a high internal surface area (800 - 1000 m2/g). LÄS MER
17. Development of Functionalized Protein Materials
Sammanfattning : Many proteins are available as side-streams from food production, and in some cases even from industrial waste-streams. This means that proteins are available in large scale and at a relatively low price. As protein are highly complex molecules it is interesting to try to use protein as starting materials in for applications in materials science. LÄS MER
18. Apoptosis, cellular division or mitotic catastrophe? Effects of kinase inhibition and DNa damage in lung cancer cells
Sammanfattning : Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells are generally characterized by a low response to conventional anti-cancer agents, such as DNA-damaging drugs. Treatments that induce DNA damage relies on cellular signalling resulting in the induction of growth arrest and apoptotic cell death. LÄS MER
19. Design and Synthesis of Sialic Acid Conjugates as Inhibitors of EKC-causing Adenoviruses
Sammanfattning : The combat against viral diseases has been, and still is, a major challenge in the field of drug development. Viruses are intracellular parasites that use the host cell ma-chinery for their replication and release. Therefore it is difficult to target and destroy the viral particle without disturbing the essential functions of the host cell. LÄS MER
20. Macro-, Micro- and Nanospheres from Cellulose : Their Preparation, Characterization and Utilization
Sammanfattning : The structure of a polymeric material has a great influence in many fundamental scientific areas as well as in more applied science, since it affects the diffusion, permeability, mechanical strength, elasticity, and colloidal properties of the materials. The results in this thesis demonstrate that it is possible to fabricate solid and hollow cellulose spheres with a cellulose shell and encapsulated gas, liquid or solid particles and with a sphere size ranging from a few hundreds of nanometres to several millimetres, all with a tailored design and purpose.
