    Sammanfattning : Although most biomedical devices are non-toxic, disturbed acute and chronic inflammation and the lack of integration in tissues is a concern. At the time of biomaterial insertion, protein adsorption onto material surfaces precedes cell adhesion and is believed to alter unfavorably the acute inflammatory response and the subsequent tissue healing.     Sammanfattning : The focus of this thesis is fundamental surface force and friction studies of silica and cellulose surfaces, performed mainly with the atomic force microscope (AFM). The normal interactions between model cellulose surfaces have been found to consist of a longer range double layer force with a short range steric interaction, the nature of which is extensively discussed.
