  1. 1. α-synuclein interactions with lipid membranes

    Författare :Katarzyna Makasewicz; NanoLund: Centre for Nanoscience; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; alpha-Synuclein; lipid membranes; protein-lipid interactions; binding cooperativity; membrane remodeling; protei-lipid co-aggregation;

    Sammanfattning : α-synuclein is an intrinsically disordered protein implicated in synaptic vesicle trafficking at the synapse. Accumulation of α-synuclein in the form of amyloid deposits coincides with the loss of dopaminergic neurons in Parkinsons disease. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Biomimetic Membranes: : Molecular Structure and Stability Studies by Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy

    Författare :Jonathan F.D. Liljeblad; Mark W. Rutland; Magnus C. Johnson; Tore Brinck; Lars Kloo; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy VSFS ; Langmuir monolayer; LB depositon; phospholipids; oxidation; biomimetic membranes; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : In the research presented in this licentiate thesis the surface specific technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy, VSFS, combined with the Langmuir trough has been utilized to investigate Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposited mono- and bilayers of phospholipids. Their molecular structure, stability, and hydration were probed to gain additional understanding of important properties aiming at facilitating the use of such layers as model systems for biological membranes. 3. 3. Nanosized Bilayer Disks as Model Membranes for Interaction Studies

    Författare :Anna Lundquist; Katarina Edwards; Marja-Liisa Riekkola; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Disk; disc; lipid bilayer; PEG-lipid; model membrane; interaction; partitioning; drug; liposome; cryo-TEM; neutron scattering; capillary electrophoresis; immobilization; biosensor; membrane protein; melittin; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Sammanfattning : PEG-lipid stabilized bilayer disks have been found in lipid mixtures containing polyethylene glycol (PEG)-lipids where the combination of a high bending rigidity and low PEG-lipid/lipid miscibility favours disk formation. The disks are planar and circular in shape and their long-term stability is excellent. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Solid-State NMR Characterization of Lipid Membranes

    Författare :Vasco Castro; Arnold Maliniak; Göran Lindblom; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solid-State NMR; Membranes; Lipids; Glycolipids; Local Anesthetics; Hydration; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry; fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the study of lipid bilayer systems by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. Two-dimensional 1H-13C separated local field experiments under magic-angle spinning were employed to investigate structural and dynamical modifications of cell membranes, resulting from the addition of compounds with some biological relevance. 5. 5. RNA in model lipid membranes - interactions in bulk and at surfaces

    Författare :Agnes Michanek; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ssRNA; RNA origami; dsDNA; selfassembly phospholipids; model membranes; monolayer; QCM-D; DSC; Neutron reflectometry; hydrophobic interaction; cationic surfactants; sphingosine; phase behavior;

    Sammanfattning : The work presented in the thesis “RNA in model lipid membranes- interactions in bulk and at surfaces” aims to characterize the interaction between RNA and model membranes with different properties as well as to determine if ssRNA associate with model membranes in different ways. Several techniques have been used to characterize these systems, including quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), Langmuir film balance in combination with neutron reflectometry and fluorescence microscopy as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC).
