  1. 11. Structural characterisation of mitochondrial macromolecular complexes using cryo-EM : Mitoribosome biogenesis and respiratory chain supercomplex

    Författare :Sorbhi Rathore; Martin Ott; Daniel Wilson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mitochondria; mitoribosome biogenesis; mitoribosome assembly factors; yeast respiratory supercomplexes; single particle electron cryo-microscopy; cryo-EM sample preparation; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : Mitochondria, popularly known as powerhouse of the cell, contain specialised mitoribosomes that synthesise essential membrane proteins. These essential proteins are required to form enzyme complexes, which carry out the process of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). LÄS MER

  2. 12. Effects of Ubiquinone-10 on the Stability and Mechanical Properties of Lipid Membranes

    Författare :Emma K. Eriksson; Katarina Edwards; Victor Agmo Hernández; Emma Sparr; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ubiquinone-10; lipid bilayers; membrane stabilizer; liposome permeability; osmotic shock; cuvettes; solanesol; Chemistry with specialization in Physical Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Ubiquinones are a group of fat-soluble molecules present in many biological membranes. The most abundant version in humans, ubiquinone-10 (Q10), plays an important role in the mitochondrial respiration chain and also functions as a powerful antioxidant. Accumulating evidence suggests that Q10 also could have other functions in the membrane. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Mitochondrial involvement in cell death : release of pro-apoptotic proteins

    Författare :Erik Norberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : In addition to the role of the mitochondria in energy metabolism, these organelles play a key role in cell death signaling. In particular, mitochondrial alterations, such as stimulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, decreased ATP synthesis, loss of membrane potential and the release of pro-apoptotic proteins from the mitochondrial intermembrane space (IMS), have been shown to be involved in, and often responsible for, various manifestations of cell death. 4. 14. Wiring Components of the Respiratory Chain : Modulation of the Respiratory Chain in Yeast and Bacteria

    Författare :Jacob Schäfer; Peter Brzezinski; Dennis Winge; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cytochrome c oxidase; Electron transfer; Membrane protein; Ligand; Kinetics; Mechanism; Rcf1; Cytochrome c; Respiratory supercomplex; Cryo-electron microscopy; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : The enzyme complexes of the respiratory chain are organized in supramolecular assemblies, so-called respiratory supercomplexes. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, these supercomplexes consist of two copies of complex III (bc1 complex) and one or two copies of complex IV (cytochrome c oxidase, CytcO). LÄS MER

  5. 15. Choreography of a proton pump : Studies of charge-transfer reactions in cytochrome c oxidase

    Författare :Jóhanna Vilhjálmsdóttir; Peter Brzezinski; Joachim Heberle; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; heme-copper oxidase; cytochrome c oxidase; respiration; proton pump; electron transfer; proton transfer; proton-transfer pathway; midpoint potential; proton-pumping mechanism; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : In the last step of cellular respiration, electrons from metabolites are transferred to molecular oxygen, mediated by the enzyme complexes of the respiratory chain. Some of these enzyme complexes couple these redox reactions to formation of an electrochemical proton gradient across the cell membrane. The proton gradient is used e.g. LÄS MER
