  1. 1. Detection and significance of drug-resistant HIV-1 minor populations

    Författare :Tobias Bergroth; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :HIV-1; antiretroviral treatment; resistance; M184I V; minor populations; selective real-time PCR;

    Sammanfattning : The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the cause of the HIV/AIDS pandemic affecting millions of people around the world. Treatment with antiretroviral drugs, if used properly, leads to a dramatic decrease in virus production in the patient and prevents the onset of AIDS. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Studies of drug resistance in minor HIV quasispecies

    Författare :Halime Ekici; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The main objective was to study drug resistance mutations (DRM) in the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) gene of minor HIV-1 quasispecies, not detectable with standard techniques. Sensitive allele-specific PCR (AS- PCR) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) were developed to study resistance to drugs of relevance in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC); the nucleoside analogue RT inhibitor (NRTI) lamivudine (3TC) and the non-nucleoside RT inhibitors (NNRTIs) efavirenz (EFV) and nevirapine (NVP). 3. 3. Dynamics of drug-resistant minor viral populations and phenotypic drug susceptibility in diverse HIV-1 subtypes

    Författare :Shambhu Prasad Ganeshappa Aralaguppe; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has significantly reduced mortality in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection, both in high- and low/middle-income countries (LMIC). However, the development of drug resistance following exposure to subtherapeutic concentrations of antiretrovirals (ARV) and transmitted drug resistance mutations (DRM) adversely affects the outcome of ART. 4. 4. Studies on autoimmune diabetes in Latvians and other populations

    Författare :Aija Shtauvere-Braméus; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : IDDM is an autoimmune disease, characterized by autoimmune mediated loss of insulin secreting B- cells. GAD65 and IA-2 are major B-cell specific autoantibodies and are not found in healthy population. IDDM is associated with certain HLA class II alleles. IDDM is positively associated with HLA DR3 and DR4 in Caucasians. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Population-based studies of higher-level gait disorders and hydrocephalus : focused on brain ventricular morphometry and patient outcomes following shunt surgery

    Författare :Jenny Larsson; Jan Malm; Anders Eklund; Hanna Israelsson Larsen; Lars-Owe D. Koskinen; Uwe Kehler; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Higher-level gait disorder; Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus; Ventriculomegaly; Falls; Fear of Falling; Self-efficacy; Depression; Quality of life; Adverse events; Headache; Epilepsy; Abdominal pain;

    Sammanfattning : Background: To study gait is of great importance for the health of the aging population. Higher-level gait disorders (HLGD) are characterized by a slow, symmetrical, unsteady gait. Its cause is most often unknown. HLGD in combination with ventriculomegaly (i. LÄS MER
