3. Conceptualizing and contextualizing mindfulness : New and critical perspectives
Sammanfattning : This dissertation aims at analyzing mindfulness as a concept and a multidimensional phenomenon in its historic and primordial but also contemporary contexts. In the course of examining this more general question, this dissertation targets four specific objectives: 1) classifying existing definitions of mindfulness, 2) critically analyzing and interpreting the Buddhist and Western interpretations and practices of mindfulness, 3) elaborating on the social and existential dimensions of mindfulness, and 4) applying these dimensions in advancing the notion of mindful sustainable aging in the context of successful aging. 4. Origins of Kingship Traditions and Symbolism in the Great Lakes Region of Africa
Sammanfattning : Considering myth as the bearer of important symbolism with potentials to reveal history, this dissertation undertakes a historical interpretation of kingship traditions and/or myths in the Great Lakes region. While the historical sources describe the cultures of the peoples of the interlacustrine region, this study goes a step further to develop analytic categories using symbolism to interpret and explain the socio-political developments, which previously have been mystified and hence crystallised in theories as the well-known Hamitic theory. 5. Understanding Advertising Stereotypes : Social and Brand-Related Effects of Stereotyped versus Non-Stereotyped Portrayals in Advertising
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines consumer responses to stereotyped and non-stereotyped portrayals in advertising. More specifically, it investigates the impact of stereotyped versus non-stereotyped portrayals in terms of gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation on social effects, such as social connectedness and empathy, and brand-related effects, such as ad attitudes, brand attitudes, and purchase intentions.
