1. Risk markers and incidence of atrial fibrillation in northern Sweden
Sammanfattning : Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common clinically significant arrythmia with a prevalence of approximately 3% in the general population. Less is known about the incidence of AF. In order to reduce the incidence of AF, it is of essence to identify modifiable risk factors for the disease. LÄS MER
2. Interleukin-6 Signaling Pathways in Human Vascular Endothelial Cells : Molecular Mechanisms and Associations to Atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Interleukin-6 is pleotropic cytokine produced by several types of cells including endothelial cells (ECs). IL-6 acts on target cells via two major signaling mechanisms known as classic signaling and trans-signaling. LÄS MER
3. Neural Stem Cell Differentiation and Migration
Sammanfattning : Neural stem cells are the precursors of neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. During neural development, the division of stem cells takes place close to the lumen of the neural tube, after which they migrate to their final positions within the central nervous system (CNS). 4. Tissue Factor Biological Functions : Coagulation Activity in Microparticles and Signaling with Focus On Migration and Apoptosis
Sammanfattning : Background: Tissue factor (TF) is a 47 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein known as the main initiator of blood coagulation. TF is over-expressed on many malignant cells and apart from increasing the risk of thrombosis, the presence of TF/FVIIa also promotes the progression of cancer and metastasis by intracellular signaling. 5. Continuity or Change? : Improved Understanding of Attitudes Towards Female Genital Cutting after Migration from Somalia to Sweden
Sammanfattning : Do people’s attitudes towards female genital cutting (FGC) change after they migrate from a country where the practice is common, to one where it is not? Alongside increased levels of migration, this question is increasingly being raised. This thesis aimed to expand the understanding about attitudes towards FGC held by Somali men and women in Sweden, and thereby to identify potential factors that impede or facilitate the cessation of FGC.
