Sammanfattning : The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze debates around and changes in knowledge production and medical practices of childbirth between 1960 and 1985 in Sweden. The roles of the different actors involved, such as physicians, midwives, the National Board of Health and Welfare, the women’s movement and politicians are studied in four main contexts: medical practice and debate, the Swedish Parliament, women’s movement and the more general debate, as reflected in the media. Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis has been to examine and analyze how the discourse of medical science was established, that is to say institutionalized in Swedish society during the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteeenth century, and how a new form of maternity care developed within this framework. How these changes were constructed, legitimized, challenged, justified, and maintained are the principal themes developed in this thesis. LÄS MER
4. Cervical cancer screening. Knowledge, attitudes and experiences among women and midwives
Sammanfattning : Population based cervical cancer screening (CCS), performed by midwives, to detect cellularatypia before it develops into cancer, has been in force in Sweden since the 1970s. Thepositive effects of the subsequent decline in morbidity and mortality due to cervix cancer arewell documented but does screening also have negative consequences?Aims: To investigate knowledge about, attitudes to and experience of CCS (i) among womenin general, (ii) among women with experience of two mildly atypical Pap smears, (iii) amongwomen diagnosed with cervical cancer and (iv) among midwives who manage CCS. 5. Clinical and epidemiological aspects of obesity during pregnancy and the puerperium
Sammanfattning : Objective: To study different aspects of obesity during pregnancy, birth and the puerperium. Paper I is an intervention study of obese pregnant women. Paper II compares fatty acid (FA) patterns in breast milk and neonates ́ plasma phospholipids in normal-weight mothers and an intervention group of obese mothers. LÄS MER
