  1. 1. Satellite microwave measurements of ice cloud properties

    Författare :Bengt Rydberg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Cirrus; radiative transfer; CIWSIR; microphysical properties; inversions; Odin;

    Sammanfattning : Ice clouds play an important role in Earth's radiation balance and climate because they reflect incoming sunlight and trap outgoing infrared radiation. There is still an uncertainty about how ice clouds will respond to the effects of global warming. Many climate models use prognostic cloud mass schemes to represent cloud feedbacks. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Regional studies of the optical, chemical and microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols : Radiative impacts and cloud formation

    Författare :Admir Créso Targino; Douglas Nilsson; Radovan Krejci; Richard Leaitch; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; atmospheric aerosols; particles; optical properties; cloud; ice crystals; chemical composition; Atmosphere and hydrosphere sciences; Atmosfärs- och hydrosfärsvetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Atmospheric particles are ubiquitous in the Earth’s atmosphere and have potential to influence atmospheric chemistry, visibility, global climate and human health, particularly downwind from major pollution sources. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate questions pertaining to the microphysical, chemical and optical properties of aerosol particles by using in situ data collected during four experiments carried out in different regions of the Northern Hemisphere. 3. 3. Microphysical Properties of Snow Crystals Using Ground-Based In-Situ Instrumentation : Hunting Snowflakes

    Författare :Sandra Vázquez Martín; Thomas Kuhn; Salomon Eliasson; Sandra Yuter; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Atmosfärsvetenskap; Atmospheric science;

    Sammanfattning : Understanding what happens to hydrometeors, such as atmospheric snow particles (ice crystals, snow crystals, and snowflakes) in clouds is crucial for improving meteorolog-ical forecast and climate models. Consequently, improved predictions of the precipitation amount reaching the ground (snowfall) require accurate knowledge of the microphysical properties of ice crystals, such as their size, cross-sectional area, shape, fall speed, and mass. 4. 4. Modelling optical properties of morphologically complex aerosols

    Författare :Franz Kanngiesser; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; remote sensing; sea salt; black carbon; aerosol; scattering; mineral dust.; depolarisation;

    Sammanfattning : The interpretation of remote sensing data of atmospheric aerosol particles requires a thorough understanding of the links between microphysical and optical properties. Morphologically complex aerosol models describe the particles’ morphology in detail. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Physicochemical properties and atmospheric ageing of soot - investigated though aerosol mass spectrometry

    Författare :Axel Eriksson; Kärnfysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Black carbon; soot; vehicle exhausts; wood stove emissions; atmospheric processing; SP-AMS;

    Sammanfattning : Aerosol particles contribute significantly to the global burden of disease, and remain the main source of uncertainty in assessments of human-induced climate change. The microphysical characterization of particles is necessary to understand the roles they play in the detrimental effects of air pollution on human health, and in the energy budget of our planet.
