  1. 1. Astroglial Cells : Role in Neurodegenerative-Inflammatory Processes in the Central Nervous System

    Författare :Gun Eriksson; Karl Åkerman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemistry; Kemi; neurokemi och neurotoxikologi; Neurochemistry and Neurotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Inflammatory processes, mediated by the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL) -1a/b, tumor necrosis factora(TNFa), IL-6 and excitotoxic actions of glutamate, are proposed to be implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease.A neurotoxic fragment ofb-amyloid,bA25-35, was shown to induce a reactive phenotype of primary astrocytes and microglial cells in a time-dependent manner. 2. 2. Neuroprotection in the Injured Spinal Cord : Novel Strategies using Immunomodulation, Stem cell Transplantation and Hyaluronic acid Hydrogel carriers

    Författare :Nikos Schizas; Nils Hailer; Elena Kozlova; Mikael Svensson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Hyaluronic Acid-based hydrogel; motorneurons; microglial cells; Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist; Renshaw cells; excitotoxicity; neuroinflammation; Neural Crest Stem Cells; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to establish strategies to minimize secondary damage to the injured spinal cord. Secondary damage that follows spinal cord injury (SCI) involves inflammatory and excitotoxic pathways. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Mesenchymal stem cells for repair of the peripheral and central nervous system

    Författare :Maria Brohlin; Mikael Wiberg; Martin Birchall; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bone marrow-derived stromal cells; Schwann cells; Peripheral nerve injury; Spinal cord injury; Neurotransplantation; anatomi; Human Anatomy; cell research; cellforskning;

    Sammanfattning : Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been shown to provide neuroprotection after transplantation into the injured nervous system. The present thesis investigates whether adult human and rat MSC differentiated along a Schwann cell lineage could increase their expression of neurotrophic factors and promote regeneration after transplantation into the injured peripheral nerve and spinal cord. 4. 4. On the stimulatory effect of microglial cells on angiogenesis

    Författare :Simin Rymo; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :microglia; angiogenesis; aortic ring;

    Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT Angiogenesis, the process by which new vessels sprout from pre-existing vessels, is fundamental to development, tissue growth and repair. The main aim of this thesis was to investigate the role of microglia on angiogenesis. We adapted the rat ex vivo/in vitro aortic ring model to the mouse in a 3-D culture system. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Microglial cells in Neurodegenerative Diseases. The Role of Galectin-3

    Författare :Antonio Boza Serrano; Neuroinflammation; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neurosciences; microglia; Galectin-3; Alzheimer disease; Parkinson disease; innate immune system; TLR4; TREM2;

    Sammanfattning : Today, dementia such as, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), vascular diseases and motor neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), represent a major public health problem. For instance, PD affect to more than 10 million people worldwide and almost 50 million people are affected by dementia. LÄS MER
