16. Structural design and properties of hydrogel biomaterials
Sammanfattning : Today a range of materials are used in medical applications; such materials are collectively denoted as biomaterials. A special class of biomaterials currently given much scientific interest is hydrogels. In particular a contemporary research topic is to create multicomponent materials in which synergetic effects are achieved. LÄS MER
17. Water-in-diesel emulsion and microemulsion fuels: composition, structure and effect on emissions
Sammanfattning : Water-in-diesel fuels, as emulsions and microemulsions, give reduced emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) in combustion in diesel engines compared to regular diesel. These fuels can contribute to an improved local environment in densely populated areas as they can replace regular diesel in existing vehicles without any engine modification requirements. LÄS MER
18. Preparation, characterisation and wetting of fluorinated cellulose surfaces
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the wetting by oil mixtures of two different model cellulose surfaces. The surfaces studied were a regenerated cellulose (RG) surface prepared by spin-coating, and a film consisting of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEM) of Poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) and a carboxymethylated Microfibrillated Cellulose (MFC). 19. Chemical Modification of Cellulose Fibres and Fibrils for Design of New Materials
Sammanfattning : Due to the growing interest in biobased materials in today’s society, where the need for a cyclic economy is obvious, there has been a huge increase in the interest for using cellulose due to its excellent mechanical and chemical properties. However, the properties of cellulose have to be modified and improved in order to satisfy advanced material applications where the cellulose properties can be tuned to fit the properties of other components in composite mixtures. 20. Polymer Nanocomposites in Thin Film Applications
Sammanfattning : The introduction of a nanoscopic reinforcing phase to a polymer matrix offers great possibilities of obtaining improved properties, enabling applications outside the boundaries of traditional composites. The majority of the work in this thesis has been devoted to polymer/clay nanocomposites in coating applications, using the hydroxyl-functional hyperbranched polyester Boltorn® as matrix and montmorillonite clay as nanofiller.
