1. Hydrodynamic and Microbiological Modelling of Water Quality in Drinking Water Sources
Sammanfattning : Faecal contamination of drinking water sources poses risks for waterborne disease outbreaks. To manage these risks the fate and transport of faecal contamination in a drinking water source need to be understood and quantitatively described. LÄS MER
2. Ecotoxicological assessment by microcosm tests on plankton communities
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to present a short-term plankton community toxicity test in laboratory microcosms, with which the effect of the test substance on species abundance and composition of the community is evaluated. This laboratory microcosm is an intermediate between single-species tests and outdoor mesocosm tests. LÄS MER
3. Food web dynamics in open and closed systems
Sammanfattning : This thesis is a summary of enclosure and microcosm experiments that aimed to study the impact of allochtonous subsidies on food web dynamics in a heterogeneous food web. In the enclosure studies, a three trophic level littoral food web was used. LÄS MER
4. Microbial nitrate removal from mining waters
Sammanfattning : Mining activities cause high levels of nitrogen in the process water. The nitrogen originates from the blasting procedure, where undetonated explosives in the form of ammonium nitrate dissolve in the water. Part of the water is discharged to receiving water bodies where it may cause environmental problems. LÄS MER
5. Hazard assessment of ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole and triclosan for marine periphyton : Ecotoxicology, Pollution Induced Community Tolerance and Co-Tolerance
Sammanfattning : Antibiotics and personal care products are used in large quantities and commonly detected in various environmental compartments. The two antibiotics, ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole, and the personal care product triclosan are among the most commonly detected compounds in sewage treatment plants and aquatic environments.
