1. Characterisation of the Microbial Community in Indoor Environments: a Chemical-Analytical Approach
Sammanfattning : Inhalation of airborne microorganisms and their toxic components and products may induce a wide spectrum of acute and chronic airway manifestations. The study describes important capabilities of chemical marker analysis in defining human exposure to microorganisms in indoor environments. LÄS MER
2. Untangling ambiguities in the microbial fossil record : experimental abiotic and biological approaches
Sammanfattning : Life on early earth has long been the topic of discussion for many researchers: how did it come to be? Which cells came first? Where can we find them? The most ancient rocks on our planet may hold some of the answers to these questions, but many may only be answered in laboratories. Chemical and morphological traces can be found from Archaean deposits, tantalisingly similar to modern day prokaryotes. LÄS MER
3. Effects of FODMAPs and gluten on irritable bowel syndrome- from self-reported symptoms to molecular profiling
Sammanfattning : Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a complex disorder of gut-brain interactions. The diagnosis of IBS is based on subjective reporting of abdominal pain and altered bowel habits in the absence of any clinical alterations of the gut or other pathological conditions. LÄS MER
4. Indoor and Outdoor Air Pollution in Relation to Allergy and Asthma in Taiyuan, China
Sammanfattning : The aim was to study the prevalence of asthma, eczema, allergy and respiratory symptoms among pupils in Shanxi province, China, in relation to home and school environment and outdoor air pollution. In one study there was a low prevalence of self-reported asthma, eczema and pollen or pet allergy among pupils (9-20y). LÄS MER
5. Tracking the fate of biocontrol microorganisms in the environment using intrinsic SCAR markers
Sammanfattning : Biocontrol microorganisms can be used as an alternative to conventional chemical pesticides to control plant diseases. This thesis investigated the fate and behaviour of three microbial model control agents with effect against fungal pathogens in cropping systems, and the spread of one of the model strains in bioaerosols.
