  1. 16. The Dawn of a New Age : Interrelationships of Acoela and Nemertodermatida and the Early Evolution of Bilateria

    Författare :Andreas Wallberg; Ulf Jondelius; Mikael Thollesson; Graham Budd; Gonzalo Giribet; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acoela; Nemertodermatida; Bilateria; Metazoa; evolution; phylogenetic inferrence; ancestral reconstruction; taxon sampling; microRNA; Systematics and phylogenetics; Systematik och fylogeni; systematisk zoologi; Systematic Zoology;

    Sammanfattning : Deciphering the rapid emergence of bilaterian animals around the time of the Cambrian Explosion and reconstructing the interrelationships of animal groups have long been two of the most elusive problems in Zoology. This thesis concerns the phylogenetic interrelationships within and among Acoela and Nemertodermatida, two groups of small worms that are believed to be basal bilaterians and which may provide important clues for understanding the early evolution of animals. 2. 17. The Role of miRNA in Neurogenesis and Cell Specification

    Författare :Malin Åkerblom; Molekylär neurogenetik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; miRNA; microRNA; miR-124; miR-9; miR-125; adult neurogenesis; neural stem cells; cell specification; microglia; lentiviral vectors; olfactory bulb; olfactory bulb interneurons;

    Sammanfattning : Only a few decades ago, it was generally believed that gene expression was controlled in a unidirectional way, i.e. DNA was transcribed into RNA, which simply acted as a messenger molecule used to produce the protein that executed cellular functions. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Vibrio cholerae modulates the immune defense of human gut mucosa

    Författare :Aziz Bitar; Marie-Louise Hammarström; Sun Nynt Wai; Mikael Rehn; Umeå universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : The key function of innate immunity is to sense danger signals and initiate effective responses as a defense mechanism against pathogens. Simultaneously, effector responses must be regulated to avoid excessive inflammation with resulting tissue damage. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Familial amyloidosis with polyneuropathy : studies of genetic factors modifying the phenotype of the disease

    Författare :Malin Olsson; Ole B Suhr; Lisbeth Tranebjærg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Familial amyloid polyneuropathy; Amyloidosis; Transthyretin; Allele Frequency; Mitochondria; parent-of-origin; MicroRNA; Single Nucleotide Polymorphism; 3 Untranslated Regions genetics; Medical genetics; Medicinsk genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; genetik; Genetics; klinisk genetik; Clinical Genetics; medicin; Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Background. Familial Amyloidosis with Polyneuropathy (FAP) is an autosomal dominantly inherited systemic amyloid disease. The disease is caused by mutations in the transthyretin (TTR) gene, where close to 100 different amyloidogenic mutations have been identified. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype - Implications for vascular disease states

    Författare :Azra Alajbegovic; Molekylär kärlfysiologi; []

    Sammanfattning : As the world population is pushing toward 8 billion, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of death worldwide, representing 30% of all global deaths. A large body of work has recognized that smooth muscle cells (SMCs) surrounding the blood vessels play a prominent role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. LÄS MER
