  1. 1. Genetic variation in the folate receptor-alpha and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase genes as determinants of plasma homocysteine concentrations

    Författare :Anna Böttiger; Torbjörn Nilsson; Henrik Zetterberg; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Folate receptor-alpha; Folate; FOLR1; Haplotypes; Homocysteine; Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase; MTHFR; Polymorphisms; Pyrosequencing®; SSCP; Medicine; Medicin; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Sammanfattning : Elevated total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and neurocognitive disease such as dementia. The B vitamins folate and B12 are the main de terminants of tHcy. tHcy concentration can also be affected by mutations in genes coding for receptors, enzymes and transporters important in the metabolism of Hcy. 2. 2. Fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome. Aspects on biology, treatment, and symptom evaluation

    Författare :Olof Zachrisson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :fibromyalgia; chronic fatigue syndrome; immunotherapy; active; randomized controlled trial; staphylococcus aureus; antibody response; nickel allergy; psychiatric status rating scales; folate; methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase;

    Sammanfattning : Background. Fibromyalgia (FM) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are prevalent clinical conditions of unknown aetiology with substantial comorbidity. The diagnoses are based on internationally established criteria. Women are more often affected. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Homocysteine in cardiovascular disease with special reference to longitudinal changes

    Författare :Johan Hultdin; Torbjörn Nilsson; Bertil Kågedal; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; homocysteine; methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase MTHFR ; first-ever stroke; first-ever myocardial infarction; longitudinal; prospective; risk factor; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Abnormalities in homocysteine metabolism have been suggested as risk factors for stroke and myocardial infarction. In retrospective studies, elevated levels of total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) and/or methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677C>T polymorphism have indicated an increase in risk. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Folates in the treatment of colorectal cancer

    Författare :Helena Taflin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Folate; Colorectal cancer; leucovorin; modufolin; LC-MS MS; polymorphisms; MTHFR; adjuvant chemotherapy;

    Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT Folates in the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer Department of Surgery Institute of Clinical Sciences at Sahlgrenska Academy University of Gothenburg Helena Taflin Background: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, and radical surgery with total removal of the tumour (RO-resection) is the single most important treatment. However, chemotherapy is recommended for patients with risk factors and patients with metastatic disease. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Folate - Associations with breast cancer depending on intake, metabolism, genetic variation and estrogen receptor status

    Författare :Ulrika Ericson; Diabetes - kardiovaskulär sjukdom; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; folate; B-vitamins; breast cancer; diet; epidemiology; nutrition; plasma; polymorphism; estrogen receptor α; estrogen receptor β; reproducibility; prospective;

    Sammanfattning : Folate is a B-vitamin that may influence cancer development via its role as methyl donor for DNA synthesis and methylation. Plant foods contain many bioactive compounds including folate and fiber. Results from the Malmö Diet and Cancer (MDC) cohort indicate lower breast cancer risk at high fiber intake. LÄS MER
