16. Towards a changed view on greenhouse gas exchange in the Arctic: new findings and improved techniques
Sammanfattning : Arctic ecosystems represent an important component in the global terrestrial exchange of greenhouse gases and energy with the atmosphere. In the changing climate, which is most pronounced in the Arctic, the possible scenarios of greenhouse gas exchange response should be seriously considered in predictive climate modelling efforts. 17. Carbon trace gas dynamics in subarctic lakes
Sammanfattning : Northern lakes are important sources of greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane to the atmosphere. Emissions are expected to increase as the climate continues to warm. Even so, lake carbon budgets are currently poorly constrained. This is in part because of a limited understanding of the processes that govern the flux. LÄS MER
18. Land-atmosphere interaction of a subarctic palsa mire
Sammanfattning : The main objective of this thesis was to quantitatively estimate the gaseous exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) between a subarctic wetland ecosystem and the atmosphere. Additionally some initial estimates of the carbon input to the atmosphere of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) were also obtained by combining different techniques in a joint setting. LÄS MER
19. Seagrasses in warming oceans : physiological and biogeochemical responses
Sammanfattning : The exponential increase of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations over the past 50 years has caused a rise in the global average temperature by more than 1ºC above pre-industrial levels. Ninety-three percent of this heat energy has been absorbed and stored by the oceans, increasing their temperatures, particularly in surface waters. LÄS MER
20. Characterising turbulent ship wakes from an environmental impact perspective
Sammanfattning : The world’s oceans, especially coastal areas, are intensively trafficked by ships. All these ships exert pressure on the marine environment, through emission to the atmosphere, discharges of pollutants to the water, and physical disturbance through energy input. Of these impacts, energy pollution from shipping has received the least attention. LÄS MER
