   Sammanfattning : There is a persisting controversy concerning the definition, etiology and pathogenesis of Barrett's esophagus. The dramatic and parallel increase in the incidence of esophageal and junctional adenocarcinoma over the past decades justifies an evaluation of the pathophysiology of premalignant metaplastic changes of the esophagus and the gastroesophageal junction. Upon injury, neurons and other olfactory cell types are regenerated through proliferation of horizontal stem cells.    Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to estimate the prevalence of Barrett's oesophagus (B0) and related histological aberrations, to investigate agreement between endoscopy and histology regarding the diagnosis of BO and to investigate risk factors for BO paying particular attention to epidemiological aspects of the study design. We also investigated pancreatic acinar metaplasia (PAM) with special emphasis in its relation to gastro-oesophageal reflux and BO. LÄS MER

   Sammanfattning : Columnar metaplasia, where columnar epithelium replaces the normal squamous epithelium in esophagus, is considered to be a precancerous condition in which the development of adenocarcinoma can be followed through various grades of dysplasia. The interpretation of these histological changes is subjective and suffers from considerable inter-observer variation among pathologists. LÄS MER
