  1. 6. Modulation of the calcium-force relationship in smooth muscle by polyamines and metabolic inhibition

    Författare :Karl Swärd; Cellulär biomekanik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; metabolic inhibition; polyamines; excitation-contraction coupling; smooth muscle; intracellular calcium; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The relationship between intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) and force in smooth muscle was investigated in receptor-coupled permeabilized preparations and by fluorimetry of the calcium indicator Fura 2 in intact smooth muscle. The time integral of spontaneous [Ca2+]i transients in the intact rat portal vein was decreased by cyanide and, during tonic contraction, cyanide reduced force without changing [Ca2+]i implying metabolic sensitivity of both membrane excitation and [Ca2+]i - activation of the contractile proteins. 2. 7. Mathematical Modelling of Cerebral Metabolism : From Ion Channels to Metabolic Fluxes

    Författare :Nicolas Sundqvist; Gunnar Cedersund; Maria Engström; Roland Nilsson; Sebastian Sten; João Duarte; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The brain is the most metabolically active organ in the human body and therefore rely on a continuous supply of oxygen and glucose. Neuronal stimulation in specific regions of the leads to the firing of action potentials, a process facilitated by voltage-gated ion channels in the neurons’ cell membranes. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Metabolic Significance of Fatty Acid Elongation

    Författare :Damir Zadravec; Anders Jacobsson; Douglas Tocher; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; Fysiologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : Very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs), including polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), are essential lipids whose functional diversity is made possible by variation in their chain length and degree of unsaturation. Fatty acids can either be derived directly from the diet or they can be synthesized de novo through lipogenesis, up to 16 carbons in length by fatty acid synthase. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Determinants of ligand-induced nuclear receptor activation

    Författare :Tove Östberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The nuclear receptors (NRs) constitute a highly conserved superfamily of transcription factors restricted to metazoans. In general, these receptors are regulated by small lipophilic molecules such as steroids, thyroid hormones and retinoids and play an important role in cellular regulation. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Molecular aspects of retinol uptake and activation

    Författare :Martin Lidén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) are essential for a wide variety of physiological processes, including embryonic development, growth, vision, reproduction, and maintenance of various epithelia and the immune system. 11-Cis-retinal serves as the chromophore of the visual pigments in the retina, whereas the hormonal retinoids, all-trans and 9-cis retinoic acid (RA), regulate the non-visual functions via activation of nuclear retinoid receptors (RARs and RXRs).
