Sammanfattning : The aim of the thesis is to explore socially shared ideas about mental illness in everyday contexts. Drawing on social representation theory, organizations for users of mental health services and self-help groups are regarded as communities where social knowledge is constructed that makes intersubjective understanding of illness experiences possible. 7. What Literature Can Make Us See : Poetry, Intermediality, Mental Imagery
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I investigate what kind of mental imagery ekphrastic and pictorial poetry can evoke, how time is represented in this kind of poetry, and how readers experience the temporality it represents. Ekphrasis (a verbal representation of a static, visual, iconic representation) and pictorialism (a phenomenon that occurs when the reality of the fictive world, either psychological or physical, in the text is represented as image) are intermedial concepts: in various ways and to various degrees, ekphrastic and pictorial texts refer to and represent static, visual, iconic media such as painting, photography and sculpture. 8. Street Working Children in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq followed over 16 years : Mental Health and Traumatization
Sammanfattning : The overall aims of the research this thesis is based upon were to assess mental disorders and trauma experiences of street working boys in Duhok (in the Kurdistan region of Iraq), compare them with schoolboys of the same community, follow the street working boys into adulthood, and examine the continuity of mental disorders, as well as their adult perspectives on their previous street work.A group of 100 street working boys was examined in 2004–2005, and 40 of the same group (as adults) in 2021. 9. Mental health in Nicaragua : with special reference to psychological trauma and suicidal behaviour
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores mental health problems relating to war and natural disaster and suicidal behaviour in the Nicaraguan population. The more specific aims of the study were to assess the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of mental disorder in a community-based study during time of war (Paper I), to assess the mental health impact of Hurricane Mitch in 1998 (Paper II), to assess the incidence of hospitalized parasuicide cases and groups at risk (Paper III), and to examine suicide intent among attempters relating to gender, suicide method and sociodemographic factors and identify predictors for repetition of an attempt (Paper IV). 10. Mental retardation in children : an epidemiological and etiological study of mentally retarded children born 1959-1970 in a northern Swedish county
Sammanfattning : In an unselected series of mentally retarded children in the county of Västerbotten, Sweden, the annual incidence of children with severe mental retardation (SMR) (IQ < 50) and alive at the age of one year decreased from 5.3 per 1,000 in 1959 - 1963 to 3.1 per 1,000 in 1967 -1970.
