  1. 6. Risk factors for bone fragility and fracture in postmenopausal women

    Författare :Ola Svejme; Ortopedi - klinisk och molekylär osteoporosforskning; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bone Fragility; Fracture; Osteoporosis; Bone Mineral Density BMD ; Menopause; Physical activity; Bone Strength; Bone Size; Bone Densitometry;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate risk factors for bone fragility and fractures in postmenopausal women in a long-term perspective. Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate long-term changes in bone mass and skeletal structure in the forearm in the peri- and postmenopausal period. 156 premenopausal women, at baseline aged 48 years, not taking medications and without disease processes known to interfere with bone metabolism, were followed through menopause by measurements of bone mass and skeletal structure at the cortical site of the distal radius by single photon absorptiometry, on average every second year until age 72. Sammanfattning : Postmenopausal estrogen therapy, initiated early in the menopause, seems to protect against development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. This thesis concerns studies of artery wall thickness and arterial stiffness estimated by noninvasive ultrasound techniques in long-term estrogen treated postmenopausal women who initiated therapy at the time of the menopause. Sammanfattning : One of the most critical elements in empowering the patient, and ensuring concordance, is communication of the possible benefits and harms of different actions in health care. Risk assessment is a complex task due both to the different interpretations of the concept of risk, and the common lack of hard facts. LÄS MER
