1. Exploring the Interplay of Lipids and Membrane Proteins
Sammanfattning : The interplay between lipids and membrane proteins is known to affect membrane protein topology and thus have significant effect (control) on their functions. In this PhD thesis, the influence of lipids on the membrane protein function was studied using three different membrane protein models. LÄS MER
2. Membrane Stress and the Role of GYF Domain Proteins
Sammanfattning : Intracellular membrane trafficking is regulated by a large number of protein complexes and lipids. Blocking of trafficking disrupts normal membrane dynamics and causes membrane stress. LÄS MER
3. Prestress in Nature and Technics
Sammanfattning : To direct the forces of nature is a central task in the creation of spaces and load-carrying structures for architecture. This research investigates how prestress can be used as a design tool for the creation of material efficient and well-functioning structures, and in early design stages contribute to sustainable, functional and beautiful architecture. 4. Development of quantitative optical microscopy methods for single cell analysis
Sammanfattning : Optical microscopy has brought powerful methods to biological research, in particular the possibility to assay dynamic molecular processes within living individual cells. This thesis deals with various aspects of fluorescence and Raman microscopy, such as the possibility of avoiding cellular damage or stress caused by illumination, how to manipulate single cells for spectroscopic analysis and how to quantify images automatically. 5. Design and development of a novel textile based bioreactor: : Ethanol and biogas production as case studies
Sammanfattning : Bioreactors are designed to provide enabling conditions for the controlled growth of microorganisms, such as good heat and mass transfer, aeration, hydrodynamics, geometry for adequate gas holdup, pH and foaming control, conditions for optimal substrate consumption and product formation, as well as mechanisms for monitoring microbial conditions. Additionally, bioreactors are designed to handle stress that would be exerted on them by the weight of the fermenting media and by the high pressure used for sterilisation. LÄS MER
