1. The Functional Significance and Chromatin Organisation of the Imprinting Control Regions of the H19 and Kcnq1 Genes
Sammanfattning : Genomic imprinting is a phenomenon through which a subset of genes are epigenetically marked during gemtogenisis. This mark is maintained in the soma to often manifest parent of origin-specific monoalleleic expresson patterns. LÄS MER
2. Data-driven Methods for Spoken Dialogue Systems : Applications in Language Understanding, Turn-taking, Error Detection, and Knowledge Acquisition
Sammanfattning : Spoken dialogue systems are application interfaces that enable humans to interact with computers using spoken natural language. A major challenge for these systems is dealing with the ubiquity of variability—in user behavior, in the performance of the various speech and language processing sub-components, and in the dynamics of the task domain. 3. Food environments in socioeconomically disadvantaged and immigrant populations through a non-communicable disease lens
Sammanfattning : Background: Globally, non-communicable diseases are increasing. With an evidenced link to the social determinants of health, this highlights a social gradient, whereby socioeconomic status, ethnicity and other factors influence poorer health outcomes. LÄS MER
4. Life-course influences on occurrence and outcome for stroke and coronary heart disease
Sammanfattning : Although typical clinical onset does not occur until adulthood, cardiovascular disease (CVD) may have a long natural history with accumulation of risks beginning in early life and continuing through childhood and into adolescence and adulthood. Therefore, it is important to adopt a life-course approach to explore accumulation of risks, as well as identifying age-defined windows of susceptibility, from early life to disease onset. LÄS MER
5. Childhood bereavement, stress resilience, and cancer risk : an integrated register-based approach
Sammanfattning : Accumulating evidence suggests that psychosocial stress and susceptibility to stressful exposures – stress resilience – influence the risk of various health outcomes, but the potential link with cancer occurrence is unclear. The aims of this thesis were to test if loss of a close relative, a marker of severe psychological stress, and stress resilience measured during late adolescence are associated with cancer risk later in life, as well as to explore potential underlying mechanisms.
