1. Conjugated Polymers for Neural Interfaces : Prospects, possibilities and future challenges
Sammanfattning : Within the field of neuroprosthetics the possibility to use implanted electrodes for communication with the nervous system is explored. Much effort is put into the material aspects of the electrode implant to increase charge injection capacity, suppress foreign body response and build micro sized electrode arrays allowing close contact with neurons. 2. Geopolymer-based drug formulations for oral delivery of opioids
Sammanfattning : Opioid therapy for chronic pain generally use controlled release formulations to deliver analgesic drugs around-the-clock. Controlled release dosage forms can enlarge the therapeutic effect by controlling the rate and site of release. However, with high drug content, opioid formulations are easily targeted for non-medical use. LÄS MER
3. Extracellular matrix mimetic multi-functional scaffolds for tissue engineering and biomedical applications
Sammanfattning : Regeneration of functional tissues or complex organs via the combination of viable cells, biomimetic scaffolds, morphogenic factors, and external biophysical cues are the principle aims of Tissue Engineering (TE). TE relies on the use of artificial 3D scaffolds that can mimic the microenvironment of native tissue to harness the regenerative potential of cells. LÄS MER
4. From Macro to Nano : Electrokinetic Transport and Surface Control
Sammanfattning : Today, the growing and aging population, and the rise of new global threats on human health puts an increasing demand on the healthcare system and calls for preventive actions. To make existing medical treatments more efficient and widely accessible and to prevent the emergence of new threats such as drug-resistant bacteria, improved diagnostic technologies are needed. 5. Engineering 3D degradable pliable scaffolds for adipose tissue regeneration : Advancing cell-material interactions by understanding the influence from thermal, chemical, mechanical properties and scaffold design
Sammanfattning : In soft tissue defects that arise due to trauma, tumor resections and complex burns, a significant loss in adipose tissue remains a considerable challenge due to the insufficient regenerative capacity of the tissue. This thesis focuses on assessing cell-material interactions between degradable 3D polymer scaffolds with different designs and adipose tissue-derived stem cells. LÄS MER
