6. Exploring medical applications of a bioactive polymer
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, we have studied a polymeric compound called PVAC, designed as a scavenger of reactive electrophilic substances. We explored several diseases where these substances are overproduced. In Paper I, adhesion formation was induced via bowel anastomosis surgery in rats. LÄS MER
7. Targeted Long-read Sequencing : Development and Applications in Medical Genetics
Sammanfattning : Targeted sequencing has the advantage of providing pinpointed DNA information, while costs and data-analysis efforts are reduced. If targeted sequencing is combined with single molecule long-read sequencing, it can become a powerful tool to investigate genomic regions traditionally difficult using the predominantly used short-read sequencing platforms, including repetitive regions and large structural variants. 8. The Physical Axon : Modeling, Simulation and Electrode Evaluation
Sammanfattning : Electrodes are used in medicine for detection of biological signals and for stimulating tissue, e.g. in deep brain stimulation (DBS). For both applications, an understanding of the functioning of the electrode, and its interface and interaction with the target tissue involved is necessary. LÄS MER
9. The Balanced Electromagnetic Separation Transducer for Bone Conduction Audiometry and Hearing Rehabilitation
Sammanfattning : Hearing via air conduction (AC) and bone conduction (BC) are attributed to bethe natural ways of conducting sound to the cochlea. With AC hearing, air pressurevariations are transmitted to the cochlea via the ear canal, whereas with BChearing, sound vibrations are transmitted through the skull bone to the cochlea. LÄS MER
10. Antibacterial Surfaces for Biomedical Applications
Sammanfattning : Medical devices such as orthopedic implants are intended to serve for improved quality of life. However, clinical success cannot be taken for granted and the most common reason for failure is due to biomaterials associated infection (BAI). LÄS MER
