1. Development of an Ultrasensitive Capacitive DNA-sensor: A promising tool towards microbial diagnostics
Sammanfattning : Fast and sensitive detection of pathogenic microbial cells is a highly important task in medical diagnostics, environmental analysis and evaluation of food safety. Accordingly, the idea of microorganism identification by the recognition of specific DNA sequence using electrochemical technique is one of the leading researches in the development of diagnostic devices. 2. Species specific susceptibility testing for ß-lactam antibiotics. With special reference to staphylococci
Sammanfattning : The main objective of this thesis was to identify methods for the detection of ß-lactam resistance in staphylococci, bacteria often causing nosocomial infections. Detection of ß-lactam resistance in these species is difficult due to strong regulation of genes encoding for the two main resistance mechanisms, ß-lactamase production and the penicillin-binding protein (PBP) 2?. 3. Studies on two bacterial resistance mechanisms to β-lactam antibiotics : extended spectrum β-lactamases in Klebsiella oxytoca and methicillin resistance in staphylococci
Sammanfattning : Eleven clinical isolates of Klebsiella oxytoca from Stockholm hospitals were found to be resistant to aztreonam and cefuroxime (MIC > 16 mg/L). The resistance was caused by a ß-lactamase with pI 5.25 and designated KH. Assay of the substrate profiles revealed that the KH ß-lactarnase was similar to the chromosomally encoded OXY-2 ß-lactamase. LÄS MER
4. Antibiotic Resistance in Wastewater : Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)and antibiotic resistance genes
Sammanfattning : A large part of the antibiotics consumed ends up in wastewater, and in the wastewater the antibiotics may exert selective pressure for or maintain resistance among microorganisms. Antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes encoding antibiotic resistance are commonly detected in wastewater, often at higher rates and concentrations compared to surface water. LÄS MER
5. Epidemiological and molecular biological studies of multi-resistant methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus
Sammanfattning : Antibiotic resistance is increasingly recognised as a major problem and threat. During the last decades Gram-positive bacteria in general, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in particular, have been in focus both concerning matters of antibiotic resistance and as pathogens causing health care-associated (nosocomial) infections.
