  1. 1. Megencephaly, significance, biology and identification of a genetic cause

    Författare :Susanna Petersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Megalencephaly; brain; mceph; ion-channel; DNA; mutation; truncation; frameshift; seizure; plasticity; neurotrophin; growth factor; neuropeptide; positional cloning;

    Sammanfattning : Enlarged brain is termed megencephaly or megalencephaly, and is defined as a brain volume above the 98th percentile. It is a major sign in several neurological diseases with symptoms ranging from very mild to lethal, including mental retardation, low intelligence, motoric and neurological disturbances, seizures and dysmorphic features. 2. 2. The megencephaly mouse : from gene to neuronal proliferation

    Författare :Ann-Sophie Persson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Megalencephaly; epilepsy; mouse model; genetics; voltage gated potassium channel; hippocampus; proliferation;

    Sammanfattning : Megalencephaly, enlarged brain, can be associated with a wide range of symptoms from benign to severe. Severe cases are often associated with mental retardation and seizures. The megencephaly mouse shows a dramatic, progressive increase in size of the hippocampus and ventral cortex. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Neural growth : with special emphasis on adult neurogenesis and the effect of antiepileptic drugs

    Författare :Malin Almgren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Neurons were for a long time thought to not renew themselves. In the 1960ies the phenomenon of neurogenesis was discovered, but it was not until 1998 that neurogenesis was demonstrated in humans. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Aspects on the modulation of potassium channels in insulin-producing beta-cells

    Författare :Zuheng Ma; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :islets of Langerhans; over-stimulation; diazoxide; exocytosis; proteasome; microarray; Kv1.1.;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis attempts to further clarify mechanisms behind the negative effects of overstimulation and the beneficial effect of β-cell rest. For this purpose diazoxide - opener of K+-ATP channels, which reversibly inhibits glucose-induced insulin secretion, was used as a probe. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Role of potassium channels in regulating neuronal activity

    Författare :Göran Klement; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Potassium channels; threshold dynamics; trafficking; hERG; SMOCs; excitability;

    Sammanfattning : The firing behaviour of excitable cells is fundamental for the information processing in multicellular organisms, varying from single spikes to different forms of repetitive firing. Of the many regulators, voltage gated potassium channels play a major role. In this thesis some aspects of the potassium channel regulation of firing are explored. LÄS MER
