  1. 1. Mapping Genes Affecting Phenotypic Traits in Chicken

    Författare :Susanne Kerje; Leif Andersson; Martien Groenen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; chicken; Quantitative Trait Loci; growth; egg production; epistasis; plumage colour; Extended black; MC1R; Dominant white; PMEL17; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik;

    Sammanfattning : The purpose of gene mapping is to understand the underlying genetics of simple and complex traits like plumage colour and growth. This thesis is based on a cross between the wild ancestor of the modern chicken, the red junglefowl, and a White Leghorn line selected for high egg mass. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Arrayed identification of DNA signatures

    Författare :Max Käller; Lundeberg Joakim; Mats Nilsson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; apyrase; allele-specific extension; competitive hybridization; DNA sequencing; genotyping; human papillomavirus HPV ; MC1R; microarray; mutation; p53; protease; Bioengineering; Bioteknik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis techniques are presented that aim to determine individual DNA signatures by controlled synthesis of nucleic acid multimers. Allele-specific extension reactions with an improved specificity were applied for several genomic purposes. Since DNA polymerases extend some mismatched 3’-end primers, an improved specificity is a concern. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The genetic basis for adaptation in natural populations

    Författare :Sangeet Lamichhaney; Leif Andersson; Carl-Johan Rubin; Alvaro Martinez Barrio; Henrik Kaessmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Adaptive evolution; Atlantic herring; ecological adaptation; seasonal reproduction; TSHR; Darwin’s finches; natural selection; beak; ALX1; HMGA2; ruff; lek; inversion; HSD17B2; MC1R;

    Sammanfattning : Many previous studies in evolutionary genetics have been based on few model organisms that can be reared at ease in the laboratory. In contrast, genetic studies of non-model, natural populations are desirable as they provide a wider range of adaptive phenotypes throughout evolutionary timescales and allow a more realistic understanding of how natural selection drives adaptive evolution. 4. 4. Hybrid zones and speciation – insights from the European crow hybrid zone

    Författare :Fredrik Haas; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microsatellites; mc1r; introgression; hybrid zone; speciation; European crow; Corvus corone; habitat preferences; neural network; sexual imprinting; assortative mating;

    Sammanfattning : In hybrid zones genetically differentiated populations meet and interbreed. As they result from ongoing divergence and potential speciation, such zones provide opportunities to study how different factors affect this process. The hybrid zone between the all black carrion crow (Corvus corone corone) and the grey and black hooded crow (Corvus c. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Mutational analysis of melanocortin receptors 1 and 5

    Författare :Per-Anders Frändberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical biosciences; Melanocortin receptor; melanocortin peptide; MSH; NDP-MSH; mutagenesis human phenotype; Farmaceutisk biovetenskap; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci; galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics;

    Sammanfattning : The melanocortin receptor family includes five subtypes, named MC1R to MC5R. Melanocortin receptors are predominantly coupled to second messenger pathway of cyclic AMP through coupling to G-protein. This study is focused on structure-function relationship of MC1R and MC5R.
