  1. 1. Insights into breast cancer: New familial patterns and identification of a potential predictive marker

    Författare :Carolina Ellberg; Tumörmikromiljö; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; BRCA1; BRCA2; Spider telangiectasias; Heredity; Parental inheritance; Recessive; familial; Breast cancer;

    Sammanfattning : The last proportion of heredity in breast cancer has proven to be somewhat elusive despite massive attempts to identify the associated factors. Approximately 50 percent of breast cancer caused by familial factors is currently explained. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Microbial and maternal influences on allergic sensitization during childhood: defining a role for monocytes

    Författare :Shanie Saghafian Hedengren; Eva Sverremark-Ekström; Susan Prescott; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Monocytes; allergic sensitization; maternal allergy; Toll-like receptor; p38-MAPK; IL-6; Epstein-Barr virus; early-life microbial exposure; NK cells; IFN-γ; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : Allergic diseases are influenced by genetics and the environment. Maternal allergy appears to confer a higher risk for allergic sensitization than paternal allergy, suggesting an in utero influence. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Non-genetic processes in development and heredity

    Författare :Willian T. A. F. Silva; Simone Immler; Yoav Soen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : There is a swiftly increasing amount of empirical evidence that non-genetic factors, such as DNA methylation and small RNAs, play an important role not only in development but also in heredity and, therefore, evolutionary dynamics. One of the most interesting aspects of non-genetic processes is their responsiveness to environmental conditions, which has been shown to affect not only the phenotype and fitness of the individuals directly exposed to the stimulus, but also their offspring even when the stimulus is no longer present, indicating that the transmission of non-genetic factors across generations might work analogously to immunization against recurring conditions. 4. 4. Maternal immune characteristics and innate immune responses in the child in relation to allergic disease

    Författare :Petra Amoudruz; Eva Sverremark-Ekström; Zsolt Szépfalusi; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : The mechanistic factors responsible for the increase in allergic diseases are still not fully understood, but a reduced microbial stimulation seems to be one of the key issues. Research is now aiming at investigating the relationship between the innate immune system, involving the toll-like receptors, and allergy development. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Exposure to birch pollen and development of atopic disease in childhood

    Författare :Anne Kihlström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Aeroallergens; atopy; infancy; sensitization; tolerance; antigen priming; intrauterine; maternal heredity; children; IgE; IgG; IgG4;

    Sammanfattning : Background: In 1993 extremely high levels of birch pollen were recorded in Stockholm, Sweden. This provided an opportunity to evaluate the effects of aeroallergen exposure on the early immune response. LÄS MER
