Sammanfattning : I argue that common beliefs regarding mathematics originate in the practices of elementary mathematics instruction rather than in science. While learning how to solve mathematical problems in school, we come to believe that mathematics has a set of properties in itself, for instance that it is useful in everyday life, even though this is not necessarily so. 2.
3. Invariants of knot diagrams and diagrammatic knot invariants
Sammanfattning : Two knot diagrams describe isotopic knots if and only if they can be connected by a sequence of planar isotopies and Reidemeister moves (cusp-, self-tangency-, and triple point moves). In this dissertation classes of knot diagrams, Reidemeister moves, and relations between sequences of Reidemeister moves are investigated, in a manner inspired by V. LÄS MER
4. Graphical representations of Ising and Potts models : Stochastic geometry of the quantum Ising model and the space-time Potts model
Sammanfattning : HTML clipboard Statistical physics seeks to explain macroscopic properties of matter in terms of microscopic interactions. Of particular interest is the phenomenon of phase transition: the sudden changes in macroscopic properties as external conditions are varied. LÄS MER
5. Variational Problems and Level Set Methods in Computer Vision - Theory and Applications
Sammanfattning : Current state of the art suggests the use of variational formulations for solving a variety of computer vision problems. This thesis deals with such variational problems which often include the optimization of curves and surfaces. LÄS MER
