1. Insights into the Evolution of Moth Pheromone Communication: Lessons from the European Corn Borer
Sammanfattning : Chemical communication by means of sex pheromones is central to the mating systems of a wide range of organisms. Because reproductive isolation is often based on pheromone differences, understanding how pheromones diverge is necessary for a complete comprehension of the speciation process. LÄS MER
2. Reproduction in the Hermaphrodite Aeolidiella glauca - A Tale of Two Sexes
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on reproduction in a simultaneous hermaphrodite with internal fertilization; the nudibranch Aeolidiella glauca. Unlike most other nudibranchs, where copulation is the rule, A. glauca was found to transfer sperm via external spermatophores that were attached to the partner's back. LÄS MER
3. Genetics and the Origin of Two Flycatcher Species
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, different genetic tools are used to investigate pre- and postzygotic barriers to gene exchange and their role in speciation in the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) and the collared flycatcher (F. albicollis). This species complex consists of four genetically distinct clades that apparently diverged in allopatry (I). LÄS MER
4. Solving repeat problems in shotgun sequencing
Sammanfattning : Shotgun sequencing is the most powerful strategy for large scale sequencing. Two main approaches exist: clone-by-clone and whole genome shotgun (WGS). In the clone-by-clone strategy, overlapping clones are amplified and then sheared in a random fashion. LÄS MER
5. Reproduction and survival in the lesser spotted woodpecker. Effects of life history, mating system and age
Sammanfattning : Over 9 years, 116 breeding attempts made by individually marked lesser spotted woodpeckers (Dendrocopos minor) were followed in a study area in southern Sweden. The home-range area decreased from on average 742 ha in winter to a defended territory of 103 ha prior to breeding and 43 ha during nesting. LÄS MER
