16. Sex in Murky Waters : Anthropogenic Disturbance of Sexual Selection in Pipefish
Sammanfattning : Animals experience variation in their environment because of natural changes. However, due to anthropogenic disturbance, the speed and severity of these changes have recently increased. This thesis investigates how reproductive behaviours may be affected by human induced environmental change. LÄS MER
17. Resources, the environment, and sex : Examining variation in sexually selected traits in a livebearing fish
Sammanfattning : Striking variation is observed in sexually selected traits. These traits influence the outcome of competition and choice before and after mating. Before mating, animals compete for the access to mating partners and choose who to mate with between several potential mates. LÄS MER
18. Genetics and the Origin of Two Flycatcher Species
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, different genetic tools are used to investigate pre- and postzygotic barriers to gene exchange and their role in speciation in the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) and the collared flycatcher (F. albicollis). This species complex consists of four genetically distinct clades that apparently diverged in allopatry (I). LÄS MER
19. Egg size evolution and paternal care in pipefishes
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I explore how sexual selection, sexual conflicts, coevolution with parental care and an environmental selective agent (hypoxia) affect the evolution of different egg characteristics and embryo survival and size in pipefishes (Syngnathidae). In the broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle Linnaeus, both sexes prefer to mate with large partners; large females produce more and larger eggs and large males can care for more young, and, as shown in this thesis, invest more per embryo and provide better oxygenation during brooding. 20. Morphological and Behavioural Differentiation in a Pipefish
Sammanfattning : A central goal of evolutionary biology is to understand the processes responsible for morphological, genetic and behavioural differentiation between sexes and among geographically distinct populations. Perhaps the most significant processes are genetic drift, natural selection, phenotypic plasticity and sexual selection. LÄS MER
