  1. 16. Sex in Murky Waters : Anthropogenic Disturbance of Sexual Selection in Pipefish

    Författare :Josefin Sundin; Anders Berglund; Gunilla Rosenqvist; Bob Wong; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Mating system; Mate choice; Courtship; Eutrophication; Turbidity; Hypoxia; Ocean acidification; Syngnathidae; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Animals experience variation in their environment because of natural changes. However, due to anthropogenic disturbance, the speed and severity of these changes have recently increased. This thesis investigates how reproductive behaviours may be affected by human induced environmental change. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Resources, the environment, and sex : Examining variation in sexually selected traits in a livebearing fish

    Författare :Erika Fernlund Isaksson; John Fitzpatrick; Gil G. Rosenthal; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mate choice; sexual selection; competition; resource restriction; condition dependence; etologi; Ethology;

    Sammanfattning : Striking variation is observed in sexually selected traits. These traits influence the outcome of competition and choice before and after mating. Before mating, animals compete for the access to mating partners and choose who to mate with between several potential mates. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Genetics and the Origin of Two Flycatcher Species

    Författare :Thomas Borge; Glenn-Peter Saetre; Staffan Bensch; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; reinforcement; reproductive isolation; Z chromosome; hybridization; mate-choice; single nucleotide polymorphism; sequence variation; sexual selection; recombination; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, different genetic tools are used to investigate pre- and postzygotic barriers to gene exchange and their role in speciation in the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) and the collared flycatcher (F. albicollis). This species complex consists of four genetically distinct clades that apparently diverged in allopatry (I). LÄS MER

  4. 19. Egg size evolution and paternal care in pipefishes

    Författare :Inês Braga Gonçalves; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Egg size; embryo development; embryo survival; hypoxia; male quality; mate choice; mating constraints; oxygen; parental care; parental effects; paternal care; reproductive compensation; sex-role reversal; sexual conflict; Syngnathidae; Syngnathus typhle;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I explore how sexual selection, sexual conflicts, coevolution with parental care and an environmental selective agent (hypoxia) affect the evolution of different egg characteristics and embryo survival and size in pipefishes (Syngnathidae). In the broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle Linnaeus, both sexes prefer to mate with large partners; large females produce more and larger eggs and large males can care for more young, and, as shown in this thesis, invest more per embryo and provide better oxygenation during brooding. 5. 20. Morphological and Behavioural Differentiation in a Pipefish

    Författare :Sarah Robinson-Wolrath; Anders Berglund; Mats Björklund; Felicity Huntingford; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; population differentiation; phenotypic plasticity; mate choice; pipefish; video playback; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : A central goal of evolutionary biology is to understand the processes responsible for morphological, genetic and behavioural differentiation between sexes and among geographically distinct populations. Perhaps the most significant processes are genetic drift, natural selection, phenotypic plasticity and sexual selection. LÄS MER
