1. Utopias of Nation : Local Mass Killing in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1941-42
Sammanfattning : This study analyses the mechanisms of local mass violence perpetrated by the Croatian fascist Ustasha organisation and the Serbian nationalist Chetniks in Bosnia and Herzegovina during 1941–42. A theoretical and methodological model has been devised, that is based on an investigation the three “dimensions” of mass killing, namely intent, systematics and magnitude. LÄS MER
2. Proteome-wide analysis of severe bacterial infections. The battle between host and pathogen
Sammanfattning : The pathogenesis of severe infectious diseases is a complex interplay between the host and the pathogen. The development and progression of a disease encompasses a multitude of processes, which balance between host-damage and host-protection. LÄS MER
3. Salvadora persica (MISWAK) : an effective way of killing oral pathogens
Sammanfattning : Mechanical removal of dental plaque is regarded as an effective means of controlling the progression of dental caries and periodontal disease. The habitual use of chewing sticks (Miswak) as an oral hygiene method is still wildly spread throughout parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. LÄS MER
4. On ionising radiation and breast cancer risk
Sammanfattning : Background: It is well known that exposure to ionising radiation increases the risk for breast cancer occurrence. However, better understanding of breast cancer risks in terms of dose-response relationships formulated according to radiobiological target theories, age-at-exposure patterns and temporal dependence are important for the understanding of the underlying biological mechanism of radiation carcinogenesis as well as for the concern about possible risks associated with the very low doses received from routine mammographic screening. 5. Antimicrobial polypeptides and lipids as a part of innate defense mechanism of fish and human fetus
Sammanfattning : Animals are constantly threatened by vast numbers of microbes and have consequently evolved an array of strategies to prevent microbial invasion. In this thesis, I have studied natural antimicrobial lipids and polypeptides associated with immediate host defense. LÄS MER
