1. Pushing diffusion MRI towards new dimensions
Sammanfattning : Diffusion-MRI techniques allow the non-invasive investigation of microstructural changes in living tissues. However, a detailed interpretation of the data is complicated by the fact that multiple microscopic environments with varying diffusion properties all contribute to the measured signal. LÄS MER
2. Beta Cell Function: from Human Genetics to Animal Models
Sammanfattning : Beta cell function is an important factor in the development of both Type 1 (T1D) and Type 2 (T2D) diabetes mellitus. T1D is characterized by a primary defect in insulin secretion due to the immune-mediated beta cell destruction, however, the more common T2D beside insulin resistance also include impaired beta cell function as a consequence to abnormal glucose homeostasis. 3. Resource Management in Distributed Camera Systems
Sammanfattning : The aim of this work is to investigate different methods to solve the problem of allocating the correct amount of resources (network bandwidth and storage space) to video camera systems. Here we explore the intersection between two research areas: automatic control and game theory. LÄS MER
4. Collateral Effect : Slavery and Wealth in the Cape Colony
Sammanfattning : This thesis reassesses the framework we have come to accept around the dynamics of slavery in a series of papers which, together, shed new light on the economics of coercion. Employing a range of newly digitized historical databases covering the economic life and genealogical history of the British Cape Colony through the 18th and 19th centuries, it explores the determinants of labor coercion in light of two significant institutional shocks: the Slave Trade Act 1807, when the transshipment of slaves became illegal, and the Slave Abolition Act 1833 when the possession of slaves was outlawed. 5. An Alkaline Active Cyclodextrin Glycosyltransferase from an Alkaliphilic Bacillus agaradhaerens
Sammanfattning : Soda lakes represent the most stable naturally-occurring alkaline environments on Earth and harbour a diverse population of alkaliphiles. Alkaliphilic microorganisms have attracted a great interest due to their ability to produce extracellular enzymes that are active and stable at high pH values. LÄS MER
