16. Improving the biocatalyst. Engineering of fungal oxidoreductases and thin-film electrodes for improvement of membraneless biofuel cells and carbohydrate biosensors
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents investigations for the improvement of electrical contact and catalytical properties of two fungal redox enzymes, cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) and pyranose dehydrogenase (PDH), with electrodes and the use of the prepared electrodes as carbohydrate biosensors and in enzymatic biofuel cells. The performance of enzyme modified electrodes can be improved in two ways, by modifying the bioelement or by modifying the electrode. LÄS MER
17. Methodology for high-throughput production of soluble recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli
Sammanfattning : The aim of this work was to investigate and determine central parameters that can be used to control and increase the solubility, quality and productivity of recombinant proteins. These central parameters should be applicable under the constraints of high-throughput protein production in Escherichia coli. LÄS MER
18. Structural studies of proteins essential for fertilization
Sammanfattning : Where do babies come from? Even though it sounds like a fairly obvious question, it took more than 200 years to discover that sperm, whose first observation dates back to the 17th century, can penetrate into the oocyte and fuse with it. Interestingly, this initial study was carried out in starfish, and since then, scientists have addressed the fascinating question of how gamete recognition functions using very different model systems. 19. Rhodothermus marinus: a cell factory : Exploring products and cultivation technology
Sammanfattning : The unsustainable human impact on ecology and ensuing climate change necessitates the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The largest contributing industrial sector is the chemical industry, due to its petrochemical dependency. LÄS MER
20. A crystallographic view of egg-sperm interaction
Sammanfattning : Animal reproduction is a heavily studied biological event, however our knowledge regarding the molecular basis of the recognition between gametes – egg and sperm – still remains very incomplete. In particular, it is currently unclear whether protein epitopes important for fertilization have been conserved among different species during evolution, and why gamete interaction proteins generally are subjected to strong positive Darwinian selection.
