  1. 1. Nutritional Screening of Older Adults : Risk Factors for and Consequences of Malnutrition

    Författare :Lisa Söderström; Leif Bergkvist; Eva Thors Adolfsson; Andreas Rosenblad; Anja Saletti; Elisabet Rothenberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Epidemiology; Malnutrition; Mortality; Older adults; Prevalence; Risk factors; Nutrition; Nutrition; Geriatrics; Geriatrik;

    Sammanfattning : Aims The overall aim of this thesis was to extend current knowledge about the prevalence of malnutrition, to identify possible risk factors for development of malnutrition, and to describe the consequences of malnutrition in relation to all-cause and cause-specific mortality among older adults admitted to hospital.Methods The prevalence of malnutrition was estimated in a cohort of 1771 older adults (≥65 years) who were admitted to a Swedish hospital during 2008–2009 (15 months) and screened for malnutrition using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) instrument. 2. 2. Liver regeneration : With reference to malnutrition and growth factors

    Författare :Stefan Skullman; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :cholecystokinin; energy substrates; epidermal growth factor; insulin-like growth factor I; liver composition; liver regeneration; malnutrition; pancreaticobiliary diversion; protein synthesis; rat; transfonning growth factor alpha; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : The liver has a unique capacity to regenerate after damage, irrespective of cause. The regulatory mechanisms of this regeneration are not fully known. Liver regeneration· is associated with rapid growth and thereby increased demands for energy and synthesis of new compounds. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Old people with femoral neck fracture : delirium, malnutrition and surgical methods - an intervention program

    Författare :Birgitta Olofsson; Olle Svensson; Yngve Gustafson; Bengt Borssén; Anna-Karin Edberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; delirium; hip fracture; older people; orthopaedics; internal fixation; arthroplasty cognitive impairment; dementia; nursing; rehabilitation; femoral neck fracture; RCT; intervention; geriatric team; malnutrition; nurses; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi;

    Sammanfattning : Hip fracture is a global and a growing public health problem. More women than men sustain hip fractures, the incidence increases exponentially with age and mean age is above 80. About one third of hip-fracture patients suffer from dementia and are prone to develop acute confusional state (delirium). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Growth and integrity of the small intestine in malnutrition and trauma

    Författare :Michael Wirén; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Glutamine; growth factors; intestinal mucosa; malnutrition; permeability; surgery; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : The small intestine is an active metabolic organ constituting a functional and immunologic barrier to toxins and microbes in the intestinal lumen. Injuries are repaired by rapid cell replication, which depends on nutritional and humoral growth factors. Glutamine has been suggested to be the most important nutrient for the enterocytes. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Malnutrition and obesity among older adults, assessed by Mini Nutritional Assessment and the body mass index, respectively : prevalence and associations with mortality and urinary tract infection

    Författare :Maria Burman; Birgitta Olofsson; Yngve Gustafson; Peter Nordström; Tommy Cederholm; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Malnutrition; obesity; underweight; Mini Nutritional Assessment; Body Mass Index; older adults; very old; community dwelling; residential care facilities; mortality; urinary tract infection; Geriatrics; geriatrik; näringslära; Nutrition;

    Sammanfattning : INTRODUCTION: Malnutrition and obesity are health concerns among older (aged ≥ 65 years) adults, but the combination of them have not been studied thoroughly nor have they been thoroughly investigated in very old (aged ≥ 85 years) adults. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the prevalence, trends in prevalence and associations with mortality of malnutrition and obesity, assessed by Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and the body mass index (BMI), respectively, and to examine the combined effects of these conditions on mortality.
