    Sammanfattning : Early investigations have shown that many chemically different compounds can cause spindle disturbances in eukaryotic cells and that there is an unspecific (physical) mechanism based on the partitioning of the compound into cellular hydrophobic compartments. This suggests that the approach should be quantitative when testing compounds for spindle disturbing activity in vitro; effect/no effect is not the most pertinent question. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : This thesis contains an introduction to the surface chemistry of minerals in aqueous environment, and a summary of five manuscripts concerning adsorption reactions at the surfaces of nano-sized gibbsite (α-Al(OH)3), amorphous silica and kaolinite. Nano-sized gibbsite was synthesized and thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.     Sammanfattning : Symptoms of intoxication with non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-receptor antagonists, closely mimic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, and therefore [+]-5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo-[a,d]-cycloheptene-5,10-iminehydrogen-maleate (MK-801, dizocilpine) treated rodents are often used as a model for schizophrenia. To investigate if administration of the NMDA receptor antagonist MK-801 to rats would induce messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) or protein disturbances mimicking those observed in schizophrenic patients, complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) microarrays and two-dimensional gel-electrophoresis in combination with mass spectrometry were used, respectively.     Sammanfattning : The incorporation of bioactive compounds into biodegradable polymer microspheres has several advantages. Firstly, the drug substance is protected from physiological degradation. Secondly, using microspheres from polymers with different degradation mechanisms, it is possible to design different release profiles with desired release rates. LÄS MER
