6. VLF and ULF Waves Associated with Magnetospheric Substorms
Sammanfattning : A magnetospheric substorm is manifested in a variety of phenomena observed both in space and on the ground. Two electromagnetic signatures are the Substorm Chorus Event (SCE) and Pi2 pulsations. The SCE is a Very Low Frequency (VLF) radio phenomenon observed on the ground after the onset of the substorm expansion phase. LÄS MER
7. Electron energization in near-Earth space : Studies of kinetic scales using multi-spacecraft data
Sammanfattning : Plasma, a gas of charged particles exhibiting collective behavior, is everywhere in the Universe. The heating of plasma to millions of degrees and acceleration of charged particles to very high energies has been observed in many astrophysical environments. How and where the heating and acceleration occur is in many cases unclear. LÄS MER
8. Substorm Features in the High-Latitude Ionosphere and Magnetosphere : Multi-Instrument Observations
Sammanfattning : The space around Earth, confined in the terrestrial magnetosphere, is to some extent shielded from the Sun's solar wind plasma and magnetic field. During certain conditions, however, strong interaction can occur between the solar wind and the magnetosphere, resulting in magnetospheric activity of several forms, among which substorms and storms are the most prominent. 9. Low-Energy Ion Escape from the Terrestrial Polar Regions
Sammanfattning : The contemporary terrestrial atmosphere loses matter at a rate of around 100,000 tons per year. A major fraction of the net mass loss is constituted by ions, mainly H+ and O+, which escape from the Earth’s ionosphere in the polar regions. LÄS MER
10. A study of the structure and dynamics of Saturn's inner plasma disk
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents a study of the inner plasma disk of Saturn. The results are derived from measurements by the instruments on board the Cassini spacecraft, mainly the Cassini Langmuir probe (LP), which has been in orbit around Saturn since 2004. LÄS MER
