1. Characterising volcanic magma plumbing systems : A tool to improve eruption forecasting at hazardous volcanoes
Sammanfattning : This thesis attempts to develop our understanding of volcanic magma plumbing systems and the magmatic processes that operate within them, such as fractional crystallisation, crustal partial melting, assimilation, and magma mixing. I utilise petrology, rock and mineral geochemistry, and isotope systematics to seek to improve our ability to forecast the eruptive frequency and style of active volcanoes, an aspect often lacking in current volcano monitoring efforts. 2. Dynamic Modelling of Physical Processes in Magmatic Systems: Dyke Emplacement and Flow-Induced Crystal Rotations
Sammanfattning : The main motivation for this thesis is to develop and improve numerical tools and methods that help further our comprehension of the volcanic plumbing system and its dynamics. The commonly used standard elastic model predicts solutions of dyke shape, thickness, over-pressure and fracturing criteria that do not always fit natural observations. 3. Magma plumbing architecture in Indonesia and the North Atlantic Igneous Province
Sammanfattning : Magma plumbing systems represent the physical framework of magma transport and storage from the source region in the mantle, through the crust, until reaching the surface in a volcanic eruption. Characterising the different aspects of magma plumbing, in particular the distribution of magma storage zones throughout the crust, is of key importance to better understand the behaviour of individual volcanoes. 4. Evolution of a silicic magma reservoir in the upper crust : Reyðarártindur pluton, Southeast Iceland
Sammanfattning : Field observations of extinct and exposed magma reservoirs shed light on processes operating in the roots of presently active volcanoes. The Reyðarártindur pluton, Southeast Iceland is an example of a fossil shallow magma reservoir that fed eruptions. LÄS MER
5. Trans-crustal magma storage in contrasting tectonic settings
Sammanfattning : Magmatic plumbing systems comprise magma chambers, sheet intrusions, and conduits which link the Earth’s deep interior with the Earth’s surface. As such, they are the structural framework of magma transport and storage that is governed by complex physical and chemical processes in magma reservoirs and through the interaction of magma bodies with surrounding crustal rocks over timescales from hours to millions of years.
