1. Genital human papillomaviruses. Studies of their occurrence, type spectrum and expression
Sammanfattning : The occurrence of genital human papillomavirus infection was determined in different categories of patients by means of PCR. In high proportion of young women attending an adolescent clinic, the presence of HPV DNA was demonstrated in simultaneously urethral and cervical samples, suggesting that genital HPV infections are often multifocal. 2. High-throughput protein analysis using mass spectrometry-based methods
Sammanfattning : In the field of proteomics, proteins are analyzed and quantified in high numbers. Protein analysis is of great importance and can for example generate information regarding protein function and involvement in disease. Different strategies for protein analysis and quan- tification have emerged, suitable for different applications. LÄS MER
3. Development of novel molecular methods for Campylobacter species and for Helicobacter pylori
Sammanfattning : Background and Aim: Different Campylobacter species and Helicobacter pylori are common causes of gastrointestinal infections that may result in diarrhea and chronic gastritis, respectively. The overall aim of this thesis was to develop novel methods for identification, differentiation and characterization of these bacteria. LÄS MER
4. Respiratory NAD(P)H dehydrogenases of plants - Gene identity and expression in response to light and cold
Sammanfattning : The respiratory chain of plants contains class 2 NAD(P)H dehydrogenases, not present in animals. The functional roles of these enzymes have been elusive for a long time. Two cDNAs, homologous to class 2 NADH dehydrogenase genes of yeast and E. coli, were isolated from potato leaves. LÄS MER
5. Quantification of gene expression in single cells
Sammanfattning : Studies of apparently homogeneous cell populations and single cells often give highly divergent results. Cells exhibit varying responsiveness to stimuli and gene expression and they are in many aspects stochastic and unpredictable. We have developed a method to measure gene expression quantitatively in individual cells with real-time RT-PCR. LÄS MER
