  1. 1. Ovarian Steroid Hormones, Emotion Processing and Mood

    Författare :Malin Gingnell; Inger Sundström-Poromaa; Mats Fredrikson; Johan Wikström; Larry Cahill; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SOCIAL SCIENCES; premenstrual dysphoric disorder; menstrual cycle; combined oral contraceptives; estrogen; estradiol; progesterone; ethinyl-estradiol; levonorgestrel; randomized clinical trial; placebo; fMRI; amygdala; ACC; insula; dlPFC; mPFC; IFG; MFG; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Sammanfattning : It is known that some psychiatric disorders may deteriorate in relation to the menstrual cycle. However, in some conditions, such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), symptomatology is triggered mainly by the variations in ovarian steroid hormones. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Utility of Combined Treatment with Antipsychotic and Antidepressant Drugs: Scientific Rationales and Clinical Implications

    Författare :Carl Björkholm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []

    Sammanfattning : The atypical antipsychotic drug (APD) clozapine is the most efficacious APD in treatment-resistant schizophrenia including negative symptoms and cognitive impairment, and still lacks extrapyramidal side effects (EPS). Clozapine, which also possesses an antidepressant effect and can be used as monotherapy in bipolar disorder, has a broad receptor binding profile with higher affinity for the α2-adrenoceptor and several serotonergic receptors than D2 receptor, enhances dopamine output in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and facilitates glutamatergic NMDA receptor-mediated transmission in pyramidal cells in the same brain region. 3. 3. Mode of action of asenapine vs. other antipsychotic drugs : an experimental analysis

    Författare :Olivia Frånberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []

    Sammanfattning : Antipsychotic drugs (APDs) are used in the treatment of schizophrenia and manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. Generally, the so-called atypical APDs, such as clozapine, may in contrast to typical APDs improve not only positive, but also negative symptoms and some aspects of cognitive impairment associated with schizophrenia. 4. 4. The phencyclidine model of schizophrenia : dysregulation of brain dopamine systems induced by NMDA receptor antagonists

    Författare :Jan M. Mathé; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; phencyclidine; MK-801; CNQX; prazosin; tetrodotoxin; dopamine; neurotensin; ventral tegmental area; nucleus accumbens; medial prefrontal cortex;

    Sammanfattning : Non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonists, such as phencyclidine (PCP) and dizocilpine (MK-801) can even acutely induce a drug induced psychotic state which closely resembles schizophrenia. The midbrain dopamine (DA) neurons, which originate in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), are involved in motivational, attentional and cognitive processes, and have also been profoundly implicated in schizophrenia. 5. 5. Neurotransmitter Imaging of the Human Brain : Detecting γ-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) Using Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

    Författare :Sofie Tapper; Peter Lundberg; Anders Tisell; Peter Zsigmond; Richard Edden; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction: In this thesis, MEGA-edited Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) has been used for the purpose of non-invasive detection of !- aminobutyric acid (GABA) within the brain. GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human central nervous system, and glutamate is the corresponding main excitatory neurotransmitter. LÄS MER
