    Sammanfattning : This partial study, being part of a future doctorial thesis, looks at the potential of education in the subject of literature to integrate the dual tasks of providing knowledge and of establishing democratic values. Two aspects of this competence for democracy are in focus here, both attributed with special importance by guiding documents, first of all to instil within the students a basic positive attitude towards a multicultural society and secondly to develop their ability for critical review of their own media culture as a source of knowledge.     Sammanfattning : The theoretical point of departure in this dissertation proposes that the liberal welfare state includes a fundamental logic of integration, viewing the attainment of social equality between different categories in society as a main condition for social integration. But how can this logic of integration be applied to a multicultural society? Is trying to achieve equal access to certain socio-economic standards sufficient, or does cultural diversity call for other measures in order to fulfill the aim of equality and integration?In this study it is argued that the liberal welfare state in a multicultural society is confronted with three tensions. Based on fieldwork, media debates, analysis ofpolicy documents, discussions with teachers as weil as teacher's educators, and interviews with principals working in the elementary schools of Malmö, the dissertation explores three analytical arenas; schools as (re)producers of values and norms, Ihe mullicullural school and finally Ihe localions of schools in lime and space. Hur ser innehållet ut i historieundervisningen i klasser där tvärtom alla eleverna har sin bakgrund i Sverige? Frågorna ledde fram till syftet för denna studie: att undersöka hur historielärare på grundskolans högstadium talar om innehållsval i mångkulturella klasser.Studiens datainsamlingsmetod utgörs av intervjuer, både individuella och fokusgruppsintervjuer.
