  1. 16. Effects of mercury and fluoride on human immune cells : elucidation of mechanisms

    Författare :Annika Loftenius; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :human; mercury; fluoride; HgCl2; lymphocyte; superantigen; T-cell receptor; TCRBV dental amalgam;

    Sammanfattning : Mercury, from dental amalgam, and fluoride, administered to prevent dental caries, have been argued to cause adverse health effects. The aims of this thesis have been to examine in what manner the fluoride and mercuric ions interact with human immune cells and, in the case of mercury, if it would be possible to monitor a tentative in vivo effect by in vitro assays. 2. 17. Chronic hepatitis B : immunological, virological and clinical aspects in the natural course and during the combined prednisolone and interferon-alpha-2b therapy

    Författare :Guo-Zhong Fei; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :HBV; IgM and IgG anti-preS2; IgM anti-HBc; CD4 CD8 ratio; lymphocyte subpopulations; HBV DNA; ALT; chronic hepatitis; prednisolone; interferon-alpha;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of this study were to characterize the IgM and IgG antibody responses to well-defined B-cell epitopes within the preS2 region of the HBV envelope proteins in sera from Chinese and Caucasian patients with chronic HBV infection in relation to viral load and liver disease activity. In addition, the effects of the combined prednisolone and interferon- alpha-2b therapy on these parameters, as well as on the peripheral lymphocyte subsets, were studied in Chinese patients with chronic hepatitis B. 3. 18. Commensal microbes, immune reactivity and childhood inflammatory bowel disease

    Författare :Cecilia Barkman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Inflammatory bowel disease; IBD; Pediatric; Childhood; Microbiota; T cells; B cells; cytokine; IL-12; monocytes; phagocytosis; intracellular signaling pathway; Crohn s disease; ulcerative colitis; children; flora;

    Sammanfattning : Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic and relapsing intestinal inflammation of unknown etiology, but immune activation by the commensal microbiota probably plays a major role. The two major categories of IBD are ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Pinpointing biomarkers of importance for children with combined type 1 diabetes and celiac disease

    Författare :Andrea Tompa; Maria Faresjö; Karin Åkesson; Mikael Karlsson; Jönköping University; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; celiac disease; children; biomarkers; immune markers; flow cytometry; cryopreservation; T cells; T-regulatory cells; B cells; B-regulatory cells; cytokines; chemokines; acute phase proteins; adipocytokines; matrix metalloproteinases;

    Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and celiac disease are both characterized by an autoimmune feature. The diseases also share the same risk genes, and thereby patients have an increased risk of developing the other disease subsequently. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Reactive oxygen species as signalling molecules in immunity

    Författare :Åsa Betten; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reactive oxygen species; NK cells; phagocytes; serotonin; histamine; myeloperoxidase;

    Sammanfattning : Cytotoxic lymphocytes such as natural killer (NK) cells and subsets of T cells are key components of the host defense against malignancy and infection. Earlier studies have demonstrated that NK cells and several phenotypes of T cells become dysfunctional and apoptotic after exposure to autologous monocyte/macrophages and other phagocytes. LÄS MER
