1. Human T-lymphocyte activation : interactions between lymphocytes and mitogenic or non-mitogenic lectins
Sammanfattning : The aim of this investigation was to gain further insights in the mechanisms of T-lymphocyte activation by lectins. Interactions between the lectins and purified lymphocytes from human peripheral blood, were studied in the following respects: in vitro culture requirements for lectin induced DNA-synthesis, intercellular regulations of the mitogen response and binding of lectins to lymphocyte surface components. 2. Factors regulating lymphocyte development and peripheral activation
Sammanfattning : Peripheral tolerance is regulated by different types of regulatory T cells, including CD1-restricted T cells and CD4+CD25+ regulatory T (Treg) cells. This thesis has focused on the interactions between T cells and antigen presenting cells (APCs) and the immunregulatory function of TGF-b as two important factors regulating differentiation and activation of T cells in the periphery. 3. Chronic hepatitis B : immunological, virological and clinical aspects in the natural course and during the combined prednisolone and interferon-alpha-2b therapy
Sammanfattning : The aims of this study were to characterize the IgM and IgG antibody responses to well-defined B-cell epitopes within the preS2 region of the HBV envelope proteins in sera from Chinese and Caucasian patients with chronic HBV infection in relation to viral load and liver disease activity. In addition, the effects of the combined prednisolone and interferon- alpha-2b therapy on these parameters, as well as on the peripheral lymphocyte subsets, were studied in Chinese patients with chronic hepatitis B. 4. Impact of intestinal worms on distal immune response and control of co-infections
Sammanfattning : Parasitic worm infections have been suggested to impair control of secondary infections and vaccine efficacy. However, the experimental data regarding the capacity of intestinal nematodes to modulate host immune responses was lacking and the mechanism underlying dampened immune responses, particularly those distal to the gut, incompletely understood. 5. T Cells and NK Cells in Coronary Artery Disease : Longitudinal and methodological studies in humans
Sammanfattning : Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death worldwide and most often due to atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory process that involves the arteries, inclouding those that supply blood to the heart muscle. LÄS MER
