1. Charting the human lung with inhaled nanoparticles : Development of AiDA - a new diagnostic technique for respiratory disease
Sammanfattning : Changes to the smallest structures of the distal lung are often the first sign of severe respiratory disease, but to date methods to detect and quantify these changes are limited. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is currently estimated to be the third most common cause of death worldwide, but is to a large extent under-diagnosed, especially at early stages. LÄS MER
2. Tumour Biological Factors Characterizing Metastasizing Serotonin-producing Ileocaecal Carcinoids
Sammanfattning : In this study, metastasizing serotonin-producing ileocaecal carcinoid tumours (MSPCs) were examined for biological characteristics that could be used to define clinically relevant subgroups within this patient population. Possible targets for new treatment options were also explored. LÄS MER
3. Role of alveolar epithelial cells in macrophage responses against mycobacterial infections
Sammanfattning : This thesis aimed to investigate the role of alveolar epithelial cells (AEC) on immune responses against mycobacterial infections, specifically, the role of AEC in modulating macrophage functions through the secretion of broad variety of factors. In paper I, we compared murine AEC with interstitial macrophages (PuM) in their ability to take up and control mycobacterial growth and their capacity as antigen-presenting cells. 4. New Aspects of Mast Cell Progenitors in Health and Disease
Sammanfattning : Mast cells are tissue-resident immune cells that are well known for their involvement in asthma and allergy. They originate in the fetal yolk sac, or in the bone marrow. From the bone marrow, they are released as immature progenitors that are transported via the blood circulation to the peripheral tissue, where they mature. LÄS MER
5. Heparan Sulfate and Development : A Study of NDST Deficient Mice and Embryonic Stem Cells
Sammanfattning : Heparan sulfate (HS) proteoglycans consist of sulfated HS chains covalently bound to core proteins. They are ubiquitously expressed, on the cell surface and in the extracellular matrix, throughout the body. LÄS MER
