6. Lipid storage and secretion. Studies on VLDL assembly and foam cell formation
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with formation of two factors of upmost importance for the development of atherosclerosis: the triglyceride rich very low density lipoproteins 1 (VLDL1) and the lipid loaded macrophages ("foam cells"- characteristic features of the atherosclerotic lesion). Both these processes depend on the cellular accumulation of lipids. LÄS MER
7. Diabetic skin microangiopathy : studies on pathogenesis and treatment
Sammanfattning : Background: Most of late diabetic complications have their basis in a disturbed microcirculation, i.e. diabetic microangiopathy. LÄS MER
8. Hyperoxia avoidance and aggregation behavior in C. elegans
Sammanfattning : Living in the soil, C. elegans can move in three dimensions in search for food. To navigate, it partly uses oxygen levels as a description of its habitat. Oxygen tension may indicate presence of microbial food and location with respect to the surface, where oxygen is 21%. LÄS MER
9. Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) and biological responses, in hypoxia, inflammation and embryonic vascular development
Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT Low oxygen tension (hypoxia) is a major inducer of neovascularisation and evidence emerging has indicated that oxygen tension and hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), a family of oxygen-regulated heterodimeric transcription factors, may play important roles in vascular and hematopoietic development. This thesis has focused on studying molecular and cellular mechanisms, by which cells and organisms sense changes in oxygen tension, and how this signal is transduced by HIFs into downstream signalling. 10. Properties of Endothelium and its Importance in Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans
Sammanfattning : Transplantation of insulin producing cells is currently the only cure for type 1 diabetes. However, even though the Edmonton protocol markedly increased the success rate of pancreatic islet transplantation, the long term insulin independence is still very poor. An adequate engraftment is critical for islet graft survival and function. LÄS MER
