16. Lower limb venous incompetence and the effect of radiofrequency ablation versus open surgery : Focus on haemodynamics, quality of life and health economic aspects
Sammanfattning : Chronic venous incompetence (CVI) is a common condition, and varicose vein treatment is one of the most-common surgical procedures performed worldwide. Common symptoms of CVI are pain, cramps, itching, feeling of leg heaviness and venous claudication. Advanced CVI can lead to skin changes, eczema and venous ulcers. LÄS MER
17. Rectal cancer : the influence of surgical technique on morbidity, mortality and survival
Sammanfattning : Surgery is still the most common treatment for rectal cancer, being the most effective and cost-efficient modality. However, it is not without risk, nor without controversies. LÄS MER
18. Screening for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Sammanfattning : Randomised controlled trials have demonstrated that mortality from Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) can be cost-effectively reduced by ultrasound-screening of men. Evidence for screening women is insufficient. Reports of falling AAA incidence are emerging. LÄS MER
19. Procedural sedation : Aspects on methods, safety and effectiveness
Sammanfattning : Background: Safety and effectiveness are fundamental principles within the healthcare sector to provide quality of care and health improvement for patients. By ensuring that care is provided based on evidence-based knowledge, risks and complications can be minimised and the use of scarce resources optimised. LÄS MER
20. Energy based surgical instruments : With particular focus on collateral thermal injury
Sammanfattning : Iatrogenic post-operative nerve dysfunction is a significant problem in many areas of surgery and can be caused by collateral thermal injury from activation of energy based surgical devices (EBD).The aims of this thesis were to: create an animal model in order to compare mono- and bipolar electrosurgery (ES) and an ultrasonic dissection (UD) with regard to collateral thermal nerve injury, and with data of a national multicenter register to study the use of EBD and their potential effects on operation time and complication rates in thyroid surgery.
