  1. 1. Studies on N-linked glycosylation in proliferation and viability of normal and tumor cells in vitro

    Författare :Magdalena Carlberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Apoptosis; DNA synthesis; IGF-1 receptor; HMG-CoA reductase; lovastatin; mevalonate; N-linked glycosylation; PDGF; SV40-transformation; tumor; tunicamycin.;

    Sammanfattning : A number of studies suggest a critical role of N-linked glycosylation for cellular proliferation. In addition, many transformed and tumor cells have an altered 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase activity and an increased N-linked glycosylation. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Distribution and function of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in glia cells and neurons with focus on the neuroprotective mechanisms of cholesterol lowering drugs in Alzheimer's disease

    Författare :Jin Xiu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor; Alzheimer s disease; glia cells; Abeta; cholesterol; cholesterollowering drugs;

    Sammanfattning : Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are involved in the regulation of many processes including synapses regeneration, neurotransmission and neuroprotection in the central nervous system (CNS). There is increasing evidence for the disturbances in nAChRs in Alzheimer's disease (AD). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Importance of insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor and EWS/FLI-1 fusion protein in growth and survival of two different types of neuroectodermal tumor cells

    Författare :Min Wang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Treatment with comparatively low doses of the 3-hydroxy-3-metylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor lovastatin caused growth arrest in both melanoma cells and Ewing's sarcoma (ES) cells. In melanoma cells growth inhibition was correlated with a drastic decrease in N-linked glycosylation of the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R), which in turn was followed by a decreased expression of IGF-1 binding sites at the cell surface. 4. 4. Uveal melanoma : cytogenetics, molecular biology and tumor immunology

    Författare :Charlotta All-Ericsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Uveal melanoma; prognostic markers; treatment; CGH; chromosomal aberrations; HLA; IHC; Western blotting; IGF-1R; c-kit; STT571;

    Sammanfattning : Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy. The metastatic spread is hematogenous and exclusively to the liver. Although eye-sparing treatments are used more frequently the tumor-related mortality in uveal melanoma is still 30-50%. Only 2% of the patients have detectable metastases at the time of diagnosis. 5. 5. Ion channels and electrical activity in vascular smooth muscle: Effects of calcium store depletion, cholesterol and cholesterol-lowering drugs

    Författare :Andreas Bergdahl; Kärlfysiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fysiologi; Physiology; statins; endothelin; cholesterol; caveolae; smooth muscle; TRP; Ca2 channels; SOC;

    Sammanfattning : Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in the vessel wall contract to regulate blood flow and pressure, a function essential for normal circulation through tissues. On the other hand, migration and proliferation of SMCs are important factors in vascular disease, such as atherosclerosis and restenosis following surgical dilatation. LÄS MER
