1. Loss Minimisation in Dynamic Food Processes
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of the present work was to reduce losses during product changes or during rinsing in continuous food processing, with particular attention to dairy plants. The concept of sensor fusion of common process instruments was implemented as a tool to monitor the milk and fat concentrations in a dairy processing line. LÄS MER
2. Energy Evaluation for DC/DC Converters in DC-Based Wind Farms
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the suitability of three topologies for DC/DC converters in a DC wind farm grid is investigated from an energy efficiency and energy production cost point of view. The three selected topologies are the fullbridge converter, the single active bridge converter and the series parallel resonant converter. LÄS MER
3. Essays on Field Experiments and Impact Evaluation
Sammanfattning : Paper 1: Improving Welfare Through Climate-Friendly Agriculture: The Case of the System of Rice Intensification We use rich survey data to investigate the economic impact of a climate-friendly rice farming method known as the system of rice intensification (SRI) on the welfare of rain-dependent small-holder farmers in Tanzania. SRI reduces water consumption by half, which makes it a promising farming system in the adaptation to climate change in moisture constrained areas, and it does not require flooding of rice fields, resulting in reduced methane emissions. 4. Regulating energy performance of residential buildings in cold climate : a study of indicators, criteria, and evaluation methods
Sammanfattning : Building energy performance has been important in Fennoscandia ever since the early vernacular houses, to combat the cold climate. Due to EU directive 2010/31/EU on the energy performance of buildings (EPBD recast), building energy performance has become even more relevant in northern Europe the last decade. LÄS MER
5. The psycho-metabolic consequences of sleep loss in people
Sammanfattning : Night work is vital for maintaining our 24/7 society; however, in the long run, it may have adverse health consequences like obesity and Alzheimer’s disease. By performing one of the most extensive experimental in-laboratory studies to date, I sought to investigate how sleep deprivation impacts important features like how a person responds to others and how well a person can sustain attention and wakefulness during simulated night work.
